Average time to visit

The climate in the Dolomites is a typical alpine microclimate - winters are long and cold and from December to February average temperatures are below zero and night time temperatures can fall to minus 20°C. There are great differences between daytime and night time temperatures. Winters are snowy but approximately 100 days of sunshine between December and March is the norm.

Itinerary

If your great loves are skiing, exploring and great food, then a luxury ski safari in the heart of the Dolomites is right up your street. This itinerary will maximize your time on the slopes and take in some of the best views and runs in the Dolomites.

The Dolomites offer some of the most spectacular and crowd free skiing in Europe. Still relatively unexplored by all but the Italians, it is the world’s largest interconnected ski area, and one of our favorites. Magnificent scenery amongst the vertiginous peaks of this UNESCO World Heritage Site, varied ski terrain to suit all levels and quite exceptional food, there’s very little not to like. For the adventurous skier, one of the most exhilarating ways of experiencing this jewel in the Alps, is on a ski safari.

This 5 night ski safari is carefully planned meaning guests can ski from 'hut to hut' experiencing a mix of selected authentic refugios and refined 4 or 5 star hotels where you'll arrive to find your bags already there.

Your safari will take you through the best of the Dolomites, skiing a different area each day and staying in a different place each night.

Day 1 Arrive in Alta Badia via private transfer and relax in your hotel ready for tomorrow’s briefing. Alta Badia is located between 1,400 and 2,700 meters above sea level – an altitude that ensures optimal ski conditions throughout the winter, and offers breath-taking views of the most beautiful peaks of the Dolomites.

Day 2 Meet your local English speaking professional mountain ski guide for a trip briefing and rent any equipment if needed. The guide will deliver you a duffel bag and your Dolomiti Superskipass. The main luggage will be transferred to your hotel in Cortina and the duffel bag with your belongings for the nights at the rifugios will be brought from hut to hut. Alta Badia provides access to the runs around the Sella Massif, and makes it the perfect starting point for some of the most beautiful ski tours in the Alps: the Sellaronda, the Great War Tour, and the route to the Marmolada Glacier.

Day 3 Ski towards Passo Gardena and reach the village of Selva di Gardena. This route takes in the first part of the famous Sellaronda. The Sellaronda Ski Tour is one of the most fantastic spectacular ski tours in the world, circumnavigating the Sella Massif. Considered somewhat of a “merry-go-round” for intermediate level skiers, this unique circular connection of lifts and runs was once the only way the ancient inhabitants of the Ladin villages could maintain a connection with each other. Nowadays it is a modern day carousel that connects four Dolomite passes and four Ladin valleys (Val Gardena, Alta Badia, Val di Fassa, and Arabba).

Day 4 Continue the loop around the Sella Massif passing the Passo Sella. Ski to the town of Arabba, take the Porta Vescovo cable car and continue through slopes and lifts to Malga Ciapela, where you'll find the first of the three cable cars taking you up to the Marmolada Glacier. Known as the “Queen of the Dolomites,” Marmolada (3,350m / 10,990') is the highest peak and the only glacier in these mountains. Here you will witness stunning views all around you, including the Catinaccio, Sassolungo, Sella, and Gran Vernel.

Day 5 Ski to Cortina d’Ampezzo. Thanks to their infinite variety of shapes and sizes, the marvelous Cinque Torri ideally represent the entire Dolomites. Although the towers can be admired from the center of Cortina, don't be deceived by their unmistakable silhouette: the characteristic profile isn't comprised of just 5 towers, but by a mass of secondary boulders, fractured towers and peaks sprinkled liberally across the entire area. These peaks are located to the west of Cortina on a grassy hillock just above the tree line at circa 2,200m / 7,218'. In Winter the ski slopes of the Lagazuoi 5 Torri Giau area are always perfect, thanks to the favourable exposure and to the use of artificial snow programs when necessary, the slopes are easy or moderate. Facing the Lagazuoi Massif, the Gallina Ridge is a paradise for children, with slopes that are also suitable for beginners. Snuggled within the Dolomite landscape, facing Monte Cristallo and the peaks of the Tofane and Sorapis, the cosmopolitan and incredibly picturesque town of Cortina is one of the most famous skiing locations in the world, including the 1956 Winter Olympics and World Cup competitions for women's skiing, nordic ski, snowboard, snowkite, curling and snow polo.

Day 6 Breakfast and private transfer to the airport.

A ski safari in the Dolomites is the perfect way to experience the very best that these enchanting mountains have to offer. You don't need to be an expert skier as the itinerary will be completely customized to the skiing standard of your group. The beauty of these ski safaris is that you can choose how many nights you would like the trip to last and spend time moving from resort to resort, staying in hotels and rifugios (mountain inns) along the way. Your luggage is moved from property to property, always arriving in time for your stay. The thrill of spending the night in a rifugio was the highlight of the trip for me, the standard of accommodation is superb and the food is out of this world. You truly feel that you are right in the heart of the mountains. Imagine waking up in the morning and already being up high on the mountain with the slopes to yourself before the rest of the world wakes up. The guide will take you to the best powder fields and mountain restaurants and you can choose to stay on piste, off piste or do a combination. All in all, I'd highly recommend a ski safari to anyone who loves skiing, great food and wine and generally being in a beautiful Alpine environment. It's a proper mountain adventure.
