Acacia House, Kenya

Head to Kenya for an adventure-filled half-term, leaving your kids with no shortage of bragging rights when they get back to school. Acacia House is one of our favorite options for families, located in a prime wildlife area of the Maasai Mara. Imagine a private house with your own safari guide and vehicle, a cook to rustle up delicious meals, a swimming pool and lawn for the little ones to run around and burn off some energy after lunch. You set the pace of your days, so if you need to sleep late one morning, or you’d prefer to do shorter game-drives to fit around youngsters’ attention spans or meal times, you can do.

Belmond Copacabana Palace, Rio de Janeiro

With soaring temperatures and miles of sandy coastline, Brazil’s Rio de Janeiro is the perfect spot for an October beach break; throw in landmarks such as Christ the Redeemer and Sugar Loaf Mountain and you have a real winner! Stay at the Belmond Copacabana Palace right on the iconic Copacabana Beach and enjoy warm sea temperatures and perfect sunbathing weather, and if you wish to go further afield then the beaches of Buzios and thundering Iguazu Falls are also great at this time and perfect for a family escape.

NIYAMA, Maldives

Families with children of all ages will love PER AQUUM Niyama in the Maldives, with excellent facilities for tiny tots up to teens and plenty to keep parents happy and relaxed, too. The Explorers kids club caters to children aged 12 months to 12 years with a vibrant circus theme and different activities for each age range, from painting coconuts to beach volleyball matches and a climbing wall. The Indian Ocean around the two islands begs to be explored, with great diving, fishing, kitesurfing and kayaking to enjoy.

Anassa, Cyprus

The Anassa is the most luxurious beach front hotel in Cyprus, in a secluded and unspoiled location, 45 minutes north-west of Paphos, and adjacent to the Akamas Peninsula Nature Reserve. The hotel is built in the style of a Grecian village, with the buildings and gardens dotted around the village square and chapel. As you step onto the enormous terrace, you will be immersed by the breath-taking views, and the scent of the rosemary that is planted throughout the grounds. Here we have our Explorers kids club, which is managed by Scott Dunn and staffed with a mixture of hand-picked English and local nannies all trained to our high standards, and new for this year we are running Crew, an activities program for 11+.

Kiba Point , Tanzania

Teenage families will absolutely love this place – perfect for two families traveling together, Kiba Point is an exclusive-use safari lodge in the Selous Game Reserve in southern Tanzania accommodating eight people, with a beautiful large lounge area, swimming pool and with four separate cottages, each with their own plunge pool. Every day is different, with walking safaris, game-drives, bush walks and fishing included, and your own safari guide to yourselves. Wildlife here includes good populations of lion, leopard, elephant, hippo, wild dog and much more.

Located on one of Mauritius’ best beaches on the east coast, The Residence Mauritius is a fantastic option for families this October half term. Spend your days enjoying beach games with your children, or enjoying watersports including kayaking, snorkeling, glass bottom boat trips and windsurfing – there’s something to suit all age groups here, and a great kid’s club, too. Beyond the resort, you can head into the mountains to hike or go ziplining, explore sugar plantations and on horseback, or set sail in a catamaran for an afternoon.
