Mauna Kea Summit and Stars
You'll be picked up mid afternoon and from your hotel you head inland toward the base of the largest mountain in the Hawaiian Islands, Mauna Kea. The journey takes around 2 hours in total for you to reach 7000ft where you will enjoy a picnic dinner. Next you continue your ascent, past the Mauna Kea Visitors Centre at 9000ft where the paved road ends and then on a steep climb by 4 wheel drive vehicle up to the summit at over 13000 ft. Only trained drivers and particular vehicles are able to make this slightly hair raising climb. It is well worth it though to enjoy a breath-taking sunset at the top of the island before returning back to the Visitors Centre again for the next part of your experience.
Your guide will set up the 11 inch Celeston telescope so you can enjoy a private star show as the light gives way to star filled night. The Visitors Centre is close by and as it gets quite chilly in the evening, hot tea, coffee and hot chocolate are available to keep you warm. You will return back to your hotel usually around 9-10pm.
Please note that this experience is not available for children under the age of 16 due to the high elevation of the trip. Should younger children wish to attend they can stay at the Visitors Centre (with a parent or guardian) and enjoy the sunset from there then rejoin the group when they return for the star show.
