Authentic yet luxurious private camping in the Empty Quarter or on Salalah Beach
The Empty Quarter is the world's largest sand desert, and remains an undiscovered wilderness
You will have an English-speaking local guide throughout, and friendly camp staff to look after you during your stay
There is a minimum two-night stay at the camp
Salalah, and the Dhofar region in general, has its own microclimate with the 'khareef', or southeast monsoon, hitting the area from mid-June to mid-September. The result is that the Dhofar region is lush and green during and for some time after the khareef. The best time to visit is at the end of September and during October as the climate is not too hot, the rains should have passed, and temperatures are in the high-20s to low-30s, but the lushness remains making the area beautifully green. Temperatures in this area don't rise much above the low-30s meaning that it is bearable year-round.
Hud Hud provide an incredible opportunity to get off the beaten track and enjoy an exclusive private camping experience in Oman's enigmatic Empty Quarter, or on the sandy beaches close to Salalah in the southern Dhofar region.
Spending a night under the stars is a highlight of any adventure in the Middle East, and few places are better to experience this than in the remote Empty Quarter, or on the secluded shores surrounding Salalah. The Empty Quarter, known locally as Rub' al Khali, is an undiscovered wilderness, and during a stay here it is unlikely that you will encounter any other visitors. The beaches around Salalah offer vast stretches of white sand, and from the shore it is often possible to see dolphins leaping through the waves.
Hud Hud offer traditional goat-hair Bedouin tents, or safari-style African tents. Whilst the tents are authentic and fairly simple, they have been equipped to provide maximum comfort, with soft mattresses and luxurious linens as well as lanterns and torches. The camps come with bedroom tents and a living room tent, called a majlis, which is decorated with traditional Bedouin furnishings including ornate rugs and cushions, with a selection of games and books. There are separate bathroom tents which feature a basin, bucket-shower and wooden 'long-drop' loo, which is regularly cleaned and maintained by the camp staff. The camp does not have any electricity, and at night it is lit up with candles and torches, which is wonderfully atmospheric.
The service is exceptional, ensuring that guests enjoy privacy and seclusion, whilst still feeling wonderfully well looked after. The camp staff are enthusiastic and friendly, and you will have a private guide throughout your experience. Activities can be tailored to suit your personal preferences, but can include visits to ancient historical sites and breathtaking viewpoints. The camp's chefs will prepare delicious meals for you which can be enjoyed in the majlis or under the stars.
Accommodation at the camp is either in a Bedouin goat-hair tent or African safari-style tent. The tents can be double or twin, with gloriously soft mattresses, feather pillows and luxurious bed linens. The tents can usually accommodate one extra camp bed for children. Each bedroom tent has a separate bathroom tent, which is open to the skies above and features a basin, basic shower and long-drop loo. Soft towels and a range of toiletries are provided.
Children are welcome to stay at Hud Hud, although as there is a two-night minimum stay in the Empty Quarter or on the beach, it may not be suitable for particularly young children. Older children and teenagers will love the sense of adventure, and the majlis usually has a selection of games.
Your experience can be completely tailored according to your personal preferences. The town of Salalah is much sleepier than Muscat, but it has its own charm, with garden farms lining the roads offering locally grown papaya, banana and coconut. The coast is dotted with traditional fishing villages and ancient ruins, and the mountainsides are laced with frankincense trees which burst into greenery during the khareef. Dune bash over the sands of the Empty Quarter, or swim in the turquoise waters off the sandy shores.
