With its mountain location, Alila Jabal Akhdar enjoys a refreshing climate year round. However, the best time to visit most parts of Oman is between November and mid-March, when daytime temperatures average 25°C. It is worth bearing this in mind when planning your trip as for the rest of the year, much of Oman is oppressively hot and hazy, particularly between May and August.

The Alila is everything I had hoped it would be. The location is absolutely stunning, and getting there along the winding mountain roads certainly adds to the excitement.

The rooms are luxurious, but in a really under-stated, simple way, which fits in so well with the natural surroundings.

The food is delicious and now that the hotel has its alcohol license, this can be enjoyed with a tasty cocktail or glass of wine.

There are a huge range of activities on offer, from trekking and mountain biking for all abilities, to visiting local villages or the cattle market at Nizwa. It is definitely worth spending at least a couple of nights here to make the most of the experience.

The experience at Jabal Akdar starts on the journey up there from Muscat. About an hour into the two hour journey you hit a check point in the road from which only 4 wheel drive vehicles can pass. From here on the road winds its way up 200 metres to the region which translates to Green Mountain. At first glance it looks like the mountains and valleys are very rocky and rather desolate but as you look closer you begin to see the huge variations in colour and the numbers of trees and flowers that poke up between boulders and precariously attached to overhanging cliffs. Vultures swirl in the thermals above as you pass through the terraced rose farms and pomegranate tress that give the region its name. I asked the driver to stop a moment so that I could take a photo straight down the valley below which had a striking resemblance to the Grand Canyon minus the tourists and a few extra goats. The hotel is perched atop a ridge overlooking a never ending series of breath-taking mountains and valleys around. All rooms face a fantastic view with the main difference whether you are first floor with a balcony or ground floor with a step out terrace. There are interconnecting options for families but it is definitely not a place for younger children. I would say about 8 and up to be safe. The rooms are split between separate buildings with a couple of rooms upstairs and a couple downstairs in each one. The hub of the resort is the main building which houses the excellent spa, indoor pool and gym and has a huge terrace infinity pool and two Jacuzzis in front with direct views down the valley. Salim the onsite Activity Concierge who took care of all my hiking, biking and village visiting needs which easily filled three days and meals in the restaurant were wonderfully notorious and delicious so overall had a bit of a detox feel to the place too. Makes a fantastic add on to any tour of Oman or a few days away from the heat of the beach in Muscat as its about 10 degrees cooler in the mountains!

Approaching Alila Jabal Akhdar by road is extraordinary. The property, mostly built of local stone, is so in keeping with its mountainous surroundings that you can hardly spot the resort from the rocky bluff on which it sits. Once inside, youll find beautifully appointed, contemporary rooms with wonderful touches such as hand-painted walls by local artists. The bedrooms and Juniper Restaurant enjoy magnificent views so the mountains are never far away.
