Designed by Sri Lanka’s most famous architect, Geoffrey Bawa, Claughton House features his signature verandas, courtyards and open-side pavilions. This design is not only charming but really maximizes the use of light and space, meaning that the villa always receives a cool breeze, has lots of natural light and open spaces.
The five en suite bedrooms are separated in two buildings, three rooms are in the main house and the other two are in separate buildings which can be accessed by a covered walkway. Rooms are well appointed with classic modern decor and boast views of the gardens and ocean beyond. Some of these rooms come with a private garden and one of the rooms doubles as a TV and games room, equipped with an array of DVDs, a games station and table tennis.
Perched on a slope, the villa looks down onto its tropical gardens scattered with coconut palms, the pool and the expanse of the Indian Ocean. From the garden guests have access to a small white sandy beach which is suitable for swimming and snorkeling between December and April. A Yoga shala can be found in the garden and a BBQ and dining area is located by the pool which is ideal for sunset meals.
The staff and dedicated butler will ensure every need is met without being imposing and the host can organize a number of varied day trips to the nearby surrounds. These include visits to the Kalametiya bird sanctuary, Yala Safari Park and the beaches around Tangalle. The Claughton team also organize boat and fishing trips.
A stay here offers spectacular ocean views and privacy in a laid-back and tranquil setting. It is perfect for a group of family and friends looking for somewhere to relax where they can enjoy a personable and flexible service.

The Master room features a king bed which open out to a private garden. One room has a queen bed and the remaining three are twin beds.
Children at Claughton house are welcome but there are no specific facilities for children.
Relax by the swimming pool which over looks the Indian Ocean. Enjoy a BBQ in the coconut laden gardens and take a stroll along the secluded beach. With a fully-equipped kitchen guests can do their own cooking or let the in-house cook prepare Sri Lankan or western dishes of their choice. Alcoholic beverages are not available but guests are welcome to bring their own. Other villa facilities include laundry service and free Wi-Fi. Yoga and relaxing massages are available on request.
You can relax by the pool overlooking the sea, enjoy walks along the Kudawella Beach, learn to surf on the sea breaks or arrange for some spa treatments at the villa. Other attractions include the Mulgirigala Rock Temple, Bundala National Park, Uda Walawe National Park, Yala National Park and the Rekawa Turtle Conservation Project. You can also go whale watching from December to April.

Claughton House is perched on a hillside overlooking the palm swept Kudawella Beach. It is located just outside the charming village of Tangalle.
When to go
From May to August the Yala monsoon brings rain to the island’s south western half. The southwest has the highest rainfall – up to 4000mm a year. There is also an inter-monsoonal period in October and November when rain can occur in many parts of the island. Colombo and the low-lying coastal regions have an average temperature of 27°C. The sea stays at around 27°C all year. Climatically speaking, the driest (and best) seasons in Sri Lanka are from December to March for the west and south coasts.
