Sri Lanka's West Coast
Sri Lanka's west coast is home to some of the country's most iconic hotels and it's palm fringed beaches are world-famous of their idyllic nature.
Balapitiya
The small fishing village of Balapitiya is a picturesque setting with a stretch of golden sand, fringed with palms and with a surprisingly sleepy vibe, given its relative proximity to Colombo and the popular beaches of Bentota and Hikkaduwa. Despite its small size, Balapitiya offers something for all tastes, from bird watchers to sun-worshippers, architecture-buffs to foodies.
Head out into the nearby Madu River to discover a rich eco-system that supports crocodiles, mangroves, boars and a variety of waterbirds. Discover the fascinating Lunuganga, or simply sit back and watch as the surf rolls in.
Bentota
Ideally situated between Colombo and Galle, Bentota is one of Sri Lanka’s more popular beach destinations. This golden ribbon of sand hugs the coastline, with restaurants and bars offering a livelier scene combined with sleepier stretches of tropical palms and pounding surf. A number of charming villas set back in the midst of coconut groves offer secluded luxury within reach of the coast.
Surfing, jet-skiing and snorkelling take you out into Bentota’s warm waters, while inland the spice plantations and colourful villages are an interesting distraction from the beach. Further afield, the boutique shops, chic bars and excellent restaurants of the historic Galle Fort await.
