Winter sun for families

1 Hotel South Beach, Florida

Florida’s a perfect winter beach destination for families, with temperatures in the early 20s and little chance of rain. Whilst Orlando and Disney have their obvious allure for young travelers, if you’d rather escape the parks, head to Miami’s South Beach for a fun and relaxing break. The 1 Hotel South Beach is a great option for families, with superb facilities including a kids club where youngsters can go on scavenger hunts, enjoy indoor rock climbing and beach Olympics. Parents can sample the excellent spa, and there are four pool decks to choose from!

Bahiazul Villas & Club, Fuerteventura

With over 300 days of sunshine a year, Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands ticks all the boxes for a Winter Sun destination. A firm family favorite, with temperatures averaging around 23°C in Winter, the island’s a great place to unwind, soak up the rays and try your hand at some watersports. Bahiazul Villas & Club is located within a 10 minutes’ walk from the golden dunes of Corralejo’s Natural Parque and the renowned Flag Beach; home to some of the best kite-surfing in the Canaries. All villas come fully equipped and include a private pool, roof terrace, Jacuzzi plus there’s a fantastic restaurant, fitness and spa on-site too.

Galapagos Safari Camp, The Galapagos

The Galapagos is an incredible destination year-round but some of the best months are in the UK winter – between mid-December and May, when temperatures are pleasant and the wildlife viewing is at its best. For families, a superb option is to stay at the Galapagos Safari Camp, a great base for exploring the islands, wildlife and unique landscapes of the islands. There are family suites here, and plenty of kids’ activities including treasure hunts, movies and story-telling, too.

Niyama Private Islands, Maldives

As a winter sun destination, the talcum powder sands and impossibly blue waters of the Maldives beckon stronger than any other. Although traditionally one of the honeymoon capitals of the world, Scott Dunn now has an Explorers kids club based in Niyama resort in the Dhaalu atoll. Combining world class accommodation and dining with an enormous range of activities for both big and little people, Niyama really does take the family vacation and add something really rather special.

Six Senses Zighy Bay, Oman

The epitome of barefoot luxury, Six Senses Zighy Bay is perfect for winter sun in a laid back atmosphere with some of the best food and service in the Middle East. There is plenty to do from relaxing by your private pool, to paragliding, snorkeling, mountain biking or watching a film under the stars.

Our winter is Australia’s summer so visiting Australia is generally best between September and April, particularly when visiting the South. For those who are tight on time, or in need of some relaxation, we recommend just sticking with Sydney, The Blue Mountains, Uluru and if you want to unwind some time on The Great Barrier Reef, Whitsunday Islands or on Byron Bay.

Thanda Island, Zanzibar

Escape to a private island retreat off the Tanzanian coast this winter where you can snorkel, dive and swim in the warm Indian Ocean. Between November and March you also have the chance to swim with whalesharks on their annual migration through these waters – a truly unforgettable experience! Thanda Island is a new luxury private island south of Zanzibar, part of the Mafia Archipelago, ideal for three or four families traveling together, with five suites and two additional beach bungalows. You have the island to yourselves to explore, with an abundance of activities on offer, from kayaking and stand up paddle-boarding to beach volleyball and picnics.

Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka, the tiny tear drop shaped island in the Indian Ocean couldn’t be more perfect for a winter getaway for all the family as it is brimming with glistening beaches, wildlife and adventurous activities; perfect for younger children as well as teenagers. Climb Sigiriya Rock fortress, head out in search of elusive leopards, trek through plantations or simply relax on one of Sri Lanka’s many beautiful beaches. Shangri La have recently opened a new resort in Hambantota, a perfect place to end your trip or to spend a week or two purely unwinding.

Winter sun for couples

Uxua Casa Hotel, Brazil

Trancoso is the stuff many traveler’s dream of – a far-flung beach in northern Brazil, where travelers mingle with locals, the chance to relax in beautiful surroundings sampling delicious cuisine, and getting away from the crowds. Stay at Uxua Casa Hotel, a barefoot luxury piece of paradise, where guest rooms are interspersed amongst fishermen’s cottages. You can be sitting on your balcony and next door a family are repairing fishing nets. Spend your days soaking up the local culture, watching children play football in the quadrado (village green) in the late afternoon, and indulging in some great food and drink. For the more active, it’s possible to enjoy hiking, snorkeling, diving and canoeing, too. The weather here is best from October to March, making it a perfect winter sun getaway.

Six Senses Zil Pasyon, Seychelles

Brand new to the Seychelles, Six Senses Zil Pasyon is set to be a huge hit. Bringing the reputable Six Senses brand to one of the most sublime locations on earth, Zil Pasyon is definitely one for the bucket list. Expect hideaway villas wedged between the enormous rocks and wandering walking trails taking you to tiny beaches graced with the impossibly clear water of the Indian Ocean.

The Betsy, Miami

Located in Miami’s hip South Beach, The Betsy is a gorgeous boutique hotel that oozes charm and is a perfect getaway for couples wanting to escape the dreary winter months. There’s a gorgeous pool here, a rooftop spa, and the beach is a short stroll away. There’s a stylish lounge bar and BLT, one of Miami’s top restaurants, is right here at the hotel. The Betsy is a firm Scott Dunn favorite, whether you’re heading out to Miami on honeymoon or just want a relaxing week away in the sunshine.

Shanti Maurice, Mauritius

Based on the wild southern coast of Mauritius, Shanti Maurice has become a firm favorite among our guests. Originally a destination spa (the largest in the Indian Ocean), this small hotel has slowly grown to offer an innovative departure from the traditional honeymoon hotel – with several wonderful dining options, including nights where you can get involved in preparing a traditional Creole meal yourself. Or if you simply want to relax to the soundtrack of the waves crashing on the outer reefs, Shanti is a sublime place to spend time with a loved one.

Shangri-La Hambantota, Sri Lanka

Brand new this summer, Shangri-La Hambantota sits on the southern coast of Sri Lanka just 200km from Colombo. Boasting unrivalled views of the rugged coastline, beautifully kept tropical gardens, an array of activities and vibrant dining options, Shangri-La Hambantota is a fabulous place to escape the winter chill.

India is at its best between October and March and we love nothing more than combining soaring forts and glistening palaces with exotic wildlife during this period. Start your journey in The Imperial in Delhi before taking a super-fast train to see the spectacular Taj Mahal for the day in Agra. Journey on onto Jaipur where you’ll stay in the colorful and quirky Raj Mahal Palace. Your journey continues with your train south to Ranthambore National Park, home to a high concentration of wild tigers. Unwind in your glorious private tent at Sher Bagh and track tigers with your specialist guide before moving onto Shahpura Bagh, in central Rajasthan, one of the most beautiful rural properties in the region. Relax here for a few days before going in search of the illusive leopard at Jawai Leopard Camp before ending your trip at the beautifully renovated Devigarh, a contemporary palace where you can enjoy some yoga.

Song Saa, Cambodia

Song Saa on Cambodia’s pristine coastline is one of Asia’s hidden jewels and is the perfect respite at the end of the trip through Indochina, or for just a week or two relaxing in exclusive barefoot luxury. With beautiful overwater villas, gourmet cuisine and excellent experiences, this is a great alternative to Thailand or The Maldives for some winter sunshine. Couple this with the stunning Phum Baitang in Siem Reap to see Angkor Wat and you’ve got an incredible journey.

Anantara Al Baleed Resort Salalah, Oman

Oman is an easily accessible destination during the cool winter months and offers something truly extraordinary. With the new Anantara Al Baleed that’s just about to open near the unique coastal town of Salalah, we think there’s no better time to visit. This region is famed for its golden beaches, cool ocean breezes, verdant palm trees, frankincense and rich heritage but until now there have been very few places to stay. We recommend simply relaxing here or combining the Anantara Al Baleed with the Chedi in Muscat and the extraordinary Alila Jabal Akhdar in the craggy green mountains.
