From May to August the Yala monsoon brings rain to the island’s southwestern half. The southwest has the highest rainfall – up to 4000mm a year. There is also an inter-monsoonal period in October and November when rain can occur in many parts of the island. Colombo and the low-lying coastal regions have an average temperature of 27°C. The sea stays at around 27°C all year. Climatically speaking, the driest (and best) seasons in Sri Lanka are from December to March for the west and south coasts.

In Sri Lanka I always thought the bigger hotels were killing some of the spirit and character of this lovely country but Anantara Peace Haven breaks the mould. It's located just outside of Tangalle on a beautiful stretch of beach and amongst a coconut plantation. The main pool area is fantastic taking you down to a lovely grassy area. If you are looking for a hotel with facilities on the south coast, look no further. There's a whole host of things to keep you busy, including a tennis court, badminton court, cooking classes, a gym, spa, daily yoga and Thai Chi and a great surfing beach close by. For the children there a great kids club and teens area - there really is something for everyone here.
