Located on one of Brazil's finest white sand beaches on the Marau Peninsula, Butterfly House is a gorgeous eco-chic property with just 8 rooms and suites that simply oozes understated style. Brazilian, French and Moroccan influences are evident in the decor, while the atmosphere is low-key and incredibly relaxed.
There are only three suites here and five bungalows spread over the tropical grounds, all spacious and beautifully designed, and fitted with verandas, wicker furniture and flat-screen TV if you really need it!
The main house contains the restaurant, Anna Banana, presided over by top Brazilian chef Elias Feitosa. Here lunch and dinner is served, with seasonally changing dishes that might include papaya and lobster salad or salt-baked guaiamum, a crustacean similar to crab with a blue-ish tinge. The bar is lovely, and extraordinary cocktails are concocted for drinking indoors or preferably by the pool.
Apart from relaxing on the glorious beach, there is a host of activities on offer from snorkeling and diving trips to exploring hidden waterfalls, learning to surf, paddle boarding, whale watching, nature trails to follow, and picnics on idyllic secret islands.
The surrounding environment is rich in wildlife, with armadillos, anteaters and marmoset monkeys, as well unusual flora (including the world's largest bromeliads), and nothing beats a day's exploring before being welcomed back for a delicious meal and an invigorating caipirinha or two.
There are five bungalows and three suites, which have either double or twin bed configurations. the largest is the Almirante Bungalow, around 56 square meters in size.

When to go
Temperatures in Bahia vary little from month to month and it's warm all year round, with average highs hovering around 30°C. April to July is the wettest season (though it can rain at any time) and June to September bring slightly cooler evenings. Salvador goes mad during Carnival (February or March depending on the year) - more than 2 million party-goers hit the streets for a colorful riot of dancing and drinking - expect prices to hike and availability to fall dramatically.
