Temperatures in Bahia vary little from month to month and it's warm all year round, with average highs hovering around 30°C. April to July is the wettest season (though it can rain at any time) and June to September bring slightly cooler evenings. Salvador goes mad during Carnival (February or March depending on the year) - more than 2 million party-goers hit the streets for a colourful riot of dancing and drinking - expect prices to hike and availability to fall dramatically.

Villas de Trancoso is an intimate boutique hotel set back from the beach on miles of unspoilt Bahian coastline near Trancoso, one of the earliest settlements founded by the Portuguese and now one of Brazil's top beach destinations.
Villas de Trancoso with its privileged, unspoilt beach location provides the perfect romantic retreat amongst lush tropical gardens. Each villa has its very own private deck or outdoor lounge area with hammocks for relaxing, spacious bedrooms and bathrooms furnished with rare and exotic Brazilian hardwoods.
The beautifully landscaped gardens provide a lovely setting for the hotel’s marble swimming pool and there is a small restaurant and bar serving international and Brazilian cuisine such as Moqueca, a classic seafood stew in coconut sauce which is a must-try when in Bahia. Villas de Trancoso also boasts a fitness centre and offers spa treatments in the comfort of your own room or on the beach.
There are miles of golden sand beaches to be enjoyed and longer walks will bring you to river estuaries which form pools of clear water at low tide. Other activities include body surfing, cycling, riding, kayaking, tennis on the nearby clay courts and there is also a world-class golf course overlooking the ocean only 2km away.
Villas de Trancoso offers five one- and two-bedroom individual villas and four adjoining suites that are slightly smaller in size. All have spacious bedrooms and bathrooms decorated with Brazilian hardwoods and boast a private deck with seating or hammocks to relax and unwind.
Children are welcome at the hotel, and babysitting can be arranged upon request, but there are no specific facilities or inter-connecting rooms. Both cots and extra beds are available should they be required.
The facilities at Villas de Trancoso are excellent and include a restaurant serving delicious ethnic dishes and a wide selection of international and local favourites, a bar, lounge area, swimming pool and health and fitness centre.
Villas de Trancoso offer activities such as surfing, cycling, horseback riding, kayaking through pristine Brazilian rainforest, tennis, golf, and snorkelling in the crystal clear waters of the ocean.

Of all the properties in Trancoso, this is the only good hotel on the beach. I loved the super-chilled atmosphere - this really is a place to completely relax - and thought the service was extremely friendly and willing, although like almost every property in Brazil, sometimes a little slow. For older families, the two-bed villas are an excellent choice, but all round this is a great honeymoon option.
Hip Hotels creator Herbert Ypma describes Trancoso as the Bali of Brazil. For a village founded by Jesuits in the 16th century, the beach parties are big and the beach bars are excellent. Dominated by the Quadrado, a grassy square, the village combines a laid-back feel with bars, restaurants and boutiques, plus regular sessions of football and capoeira. The beach itself is one of Brazil's best and includes a clothing-free area. Hotels are mostly boutique establishments that don't offend the environment or the locals. Wealthier types will prefer the Villas de Trancoso, just outside the town.
This tranquil retreat, close to the hip, historic village of Trancoso, is set in tropical gardens that open onto a private beach. US owner Galen Briggs keeps things small and intimate: there are just five one- and two-bedroom guest villas, all built from Brazilian woods. Private verandas have hammocks for the siesta hour; and the secluded beach area, dotted with shady palms, has a well-stocked bar and a little wooden gym. Bahian chefs prepare exquisite moqueca (fish-and-seafood stew in coconut sauce) and lobster. Groups of friends or large families can book the entire resort, which is proving a draw for VIPs seeking escape; Al Gore and his wife have stayed here. A recent addition is Villa Golf, a four-bedroom house set on a hillside overlooking the 17th green and fairway of the Terravista resort.
