Lalibela and northern Ethiopia

The northern regions and Lalibela are enchanting areas of Ethiopia with historical and religious importance. With the alluring beauty of the Simien Mountains and Ethiopian highlands, the archaeological wonders of Lalibela and Axum and the castles of Gondar, a visit to this area of Ethiopia will not leave you disappointed.

Lalibela is renowned for its extraordinary monolithic rock-hewn churches constructed for Ethiopian Orthodox Christians. The churches are situated below ground level and are truly remarkable, a must see if you want to really get to know Ethiopia.

To the north of Lake Tana and Bahar Dar is the city of Gondar or the "Camelot of Africa", abundant with history and castles of bygone eras, it is begging to be explored.

The more holy city of Axum in the Tigray Region, boasts its own archaeological wonders such as the 1,700 year old Stele for which it has been awarded World Heritage status. Also acknowledged by UNESCO is The Simien ('north' in Amharic) Mountain National Park, hosting endemic wildlife and valleys, plateaus and pinnacles aplenty which make for a breath-taking landscape.
