Lalibela is renowned for its extraordinary monolithic rock-hewn churches constructed for Ethiopian Orthodox Christians. Situated below ground level, these ancient edifices are truly a sight to behold. To the north of Lake Tana and Bahar Dar is the city of Gondar or the "Camelot of Africa", abundant with history and castles of bygone eras. The holy city of Axum in the Tigray region boasts its own archaeological wonders, including the 1,700-year-old World Heritage listed Stele. Also acknowledged by UNESCO is The Simien Mountain National Park, home to a mind-blowing variety of wildlife, plunging valleys, rocky plateaus and pinnacles, uniting in one of the most dramatic landscapes on earth.
