Best time to Visit

Good time to visit

Average time to visit

Aspen is at high altitude - the air is dry and thin and it can sometimes get very cold. Thermals and neck warmers are advised. Aspen Mountain itself opens in late November and closes in mid-April. The Aspen Highlands and Buttermilk slopes are open less, from early December to early April.

Insider's View

When skiing over in Snowmass, make a note of the 'Noon Groom' to ensure you get first run on a freshly groomed piste at midday.

Meet an Aspen Ambassador for a free mountain tour each day at 10.30 at the top of the Village Express Chairlift (lasts around 2 hours and sticks to green and blue runs)

Anyone snowshoeing with Erik must try his organic chocolate chip cookies - they are delicious, and just right for a snowshoe adventure!

Itinerary

This luxurious ski and city itinerary includes hitting the slopes of Aspen, Colorado in style with a break in the city that never sleeps, New York, to make a fabulous combination!

  1. Days 1-1: Fly to Denver

  2. Days 1-8: Aspen Snowmass

Your romantic ski and city twin-itinerary begins in the high Colorado Rockies of Aspen. Thanks to the quiet ski runs and great terrain, not to mention character and culture, Aspen has become renowned as both a great ski town and magnet for those seeking supremely luxurious accommodation and refined skiing.

Much of the skiing in Aspen Snowmass occurs among the trees, both aspens and evergreens, and because of the absence of any major cities nearby, the slopes tend to be deserted outside the main vacation weeks. The skiing above Aspen itself is reasonably steep and challenging - there is a range of diamond and double diamond black runs, as well as leg-burningly long groomers. Strong skiers will also want to head for Aspen Highlands, the locals' favorite which offers similar terrain but is groomed less frequently. At the top, take a cat ride before hiking the Highland Bowl to get fresh tracks as well as fabulous views, take it easy though, you'll be at just under 12,400 feet (3,780m)!

There are two additional ski areas which are easily accessible by resort shuttle - Buttermilk and Snowmass. Snowmass in particular is a paradise for those learning, or returning to skiing after a break - there are miles and miles of groomed green and blue runs, as well as some more challenging terrain off the High Alpine chair.

For a day off skiing, we suggest a snowshoe adventure high on Aspen mountain. Head up to Richmond Ridge with a guide who will take you off the beaten track, hopefully to break a trail on newly fallen snow. Feel in touch with nature as the peace and quiet are overwhelming and the big mountain views are fantastic.

Accommodation: The Little Nell (7 nights)

  3. Fly Eagle County to Newark

  4. Days 8-11: Midtown

After hitting the slopes you will then transfer to Eagle County Airport and jet off to New York to enjoy three nights in Manhattan. In midtown Manhattan you could not be better located to explore New York, from the buzzing downtown fashion boutiques and restaurants to the quiet reserve of Central Park and the Upper East Side.

If you haven’t been to New York before, there are the obvious attractions of the Empire State, Statue of Liberty and Central Park as well as great food, the Broadway theaters, museums and shopping. Even if you’ve been a bundle of times before, we keep up to date with the latest restaurant openings, coolest bookstores and best small museums, and can offer a range of less-known but equally wonderful experiences that will help you get the most out of your time in New York.

Accommodation: Mandarin Oriental Central Park (3 nights)

  5. Fly from New York

Experiences

  • Baseball Game

Sports fan or not, you can't help but enjoy a night at the ballpark. For a great evening out and an experience so quintessentially American, there’s little better than going to a baseball game to watch the Yankees or Mets.

  • Catch a show on Broadway

Whether you’re a Jet or a Shark, there’s nothing quite like going to a Broadway show to get your toes tapping. Ask us about tickets for anything from Matilda, Blue Man Group, Newsies to The Book of Mormon.

  • New York City Pass

Providing entrance to six of New York's biggest attractions, the City Pass is a great way for the first-time visitor to The Big Apple to save money on entrance fees and skip many of the main-entrance ticket queues, giving you more time to enjoy!

  • Snowshoeing in Aspen - Scott Dunn Suggests

Aspen snowshoeing is a healthy and economical way to explore the seemingly endless natural beauty and appreciate the invigorating solitude and abundant wildlife in the Aspen and Snowmass mountains.

  • The Top of the Rock

Quite simply the best views of New York City. Visit during the day and see the skyline in all its brilliance or go up at night and witness the city sparkle. And yes, the views are better than the Empire State Building!
