Vail and Beaver Creek are at high altitude - the air is dry and thin and it can get very cold. Thermals and neck warmers are advised.

Insider's View

Avoid the Tourist Trap run - there is a particularly steep and often icy part in the middle of an otherwise gentle run!

Get over to Blue Sky Basin, the furthest ski area but worth the visit (and try Belle's Camp where you can take your own food to grill on the terrace)

For some non-skiing fun, head to Adventure Ridge at the top of the Eagle Bahn Gondola for tubing (tobogganing on inflatable tubes), kids’ snowmobiles and much more for kids, small and large. Competitive natures will surface!

To start planning your ski holiday

Fabulous family-friendly ski holiday in the Colorado Rockies, with a week in lively Vail followed by a few days in Vail's little sister resort, charming Beaver Creek. A luxury ski holiday for the whole family!

  1. Fly to Denver

  2. Days 1-8: Vail and Beaver Creek

Your journey begins from Denver International Airport up to the world-class ski resort of Vail. For those wanting a change from the busy big-name ski resorts of Europe, then Colorado is a fabulous family-friendly alternative, the key resorts are Vail and Beaver Creek. Courtesy pervades the Colorado experience, you are welcome by the genuinely friendly approach that is taken by everyone from ski instructors and lift operators to hotel staff.

The ski area of Vail is ideal for all standards of skier with over 5000 acres (21.40 sq km) of skiable terrain, offering a wide range of green, blue and black diamond runs, and some wonderful powder skiing. Snow conditions are invariably excellent thanks to the altitude and the resort is lucky enough to be bathed in sunshine over 300 days per year. Children of all ages are really given lots of attention at the ski schools in both resorts and are split by age and ability. It is pricey but of a very high standard. Lessons focus on all sorts of terrain to build up children's confidence on the slopes. Private ski lessons can take up to 5 people which is great value, or for those intermediate skiers, head for one of the Mountain Tours. These are complimentary tours designed as a 'get to know the mountain' tour and well worth it.

    Accommodation: Arrabelle (7 nights)

  3. Days 8-11: Beaver Creek, Colorado

After a week in Vail you will head over to the neighbouring little sister resort of Beaver Creek, known as the resort that's 'not exactly roughing it', the resort’s slogan. The village is mainly pedestrianised and extremely popular with families, not least because of the chocolate chip cookies handed out at the bottom of the pistes at 3pm daily!

Beginners and intermediates will love the wide open groomed runs to Bachelor Gulch and Arrowhead, and advanced skiers should head to the Grouse Mountain chair for 7 or 8 black runs which snake down through the trees. For non-skiers, McCoy Park, at the top of Strawberry Park Express lift has a trail system for cross-country skiing, as well as a great network of groomed and rustic snowshoe trails. For a break from skiing, take the whole family up to Adventure Ridge for some snow-tubing in Vail or jump into an open-air sleigh (pulled by a snowcat) which heads up to Beano's Cabin for an atmospheric dinner on Beaver Creek Mountain.
