Best time to Visit

Good time to visit

Average time to visit

As Hamilton Island is in the Whitsundays and not as far north as some islands on the Great Barrier Reef the weather is not quite so extreme. The best time to visit is still between April and October but it is still well worth a visit the rest of the year.

Insider's View

Seeing the Whitsunday's from above is a must! Take a helicopter ride to Whitehaven Beach, where you will have this expansive white sandy, turquoise seas beach to yourselves to enjoy a champagne picnic.

Windward Pavilions 5,6&7 have the best views out to the Great Barrier Reef, but my personal favorite is of course the luxurious Beach House with its own private 12m pool.

Your golf buggy gives you the freedom to fully explore Hamilton Island, from the numerous look-out points to the local coffee shop and restaurants.

Take the ferry over to Dent Island for lunch at the Golf Club – the views are stunning and the food is fabulous.

Pebble Beach is located on the pebble shores of the Coral Sea and offers relaxed lunches with aromatic flavors of the South Pacific region. Both restaurants focus on local and national produce wherever possible and the emphasis is on healthy organic, simple and delicious dishes.

The view on arrival at Qualias Long Pavilion can only be described as arresting. Glittering blue ocean framed by picture windows, out across the infinity edge pool towards the neighboring islands really does cause you to put down your chilled glass of champagne, and soak it all in. The jewel in Hamilton Islands crown, Qualia (meaning a collection of qualitative sensory experiences; things that cannot be explained but must, instead, be experienced) epitomizes chic, island style.

Carved sensitively from warm woods, with plenty of glass to showcase the views, the property languishes on a peninsula with spectacular views from every angle. Pavilions here are oversized and incredibly stylish, with lofty roofs cooled by fans, reinforcing the tropical vibe that permeates throughout. The moment you enter the gates, the property invites you to relax and let the attentive team take care of your every whim. A penchant for views? They will take you to the prime spot to watch the sun set. A foodie? Let them suggest a cooking demonstration with the head chef. What the team here seemed to intuitively understand was that everyones sense of relaxation and a perfect hliday is entirely different, and getting the measure of each guest at your personalized check-in allows them to tailor make your experience.

Dining at qualia is either in the Long Pavilion, where breakfast and their fine dining dinner occurs, or down at Pebble Beach, where you can enjoy light lunches, and more relaxing evening dining, along with the beach bar. Whilst the beach down here isnt fine white sand, the views are beautiful and the pool here is vast and perfect for relaxing whilst you gaze out across the Whitsunday Passage.

Spa Qualia is also an experience not to be missed perched atop the hill in the center of the resort, it is a warren of total tranquillity. Treatments are sublime, utilising for the most part organic, Australian made products. Therapists are delightful and incredibly skilled it was certainly one of the best massages I have ever had!

Qualias private gated compound separates you from the rest of the island, but I loved having the freedom (with the use of my own golf buggy) to get out and explore Catseye Beach is definitely worth a visit, and being able to pop down to the marina to the pub, the caf or any of the numerous restaurants adds an extra dimension to your stay. Of course, the real star of the show are the Whitsunday Islands themselves, with the azure blue waters just waiting to be explored, and there is no shortage of ways to get out on the water to enjoy them.

When Qualia was built in 2007, there was really nothing else quite like it in Australia, and it immediately became THE romantic luxury retreat. It is located on a secluded corner of otherwise quite developed Hamilton Island. The advantage, however, of tourism being well established here is that there are direct flights here from most cities in the country. There are Windward and Leeward Pavilions, and I prefer the Windward as they are not only overlooking the Whitsunday Passage ( where there are not only colorful fleets of yachts passing regularly but also it is a whale migration route) but these Pavilions have private infinity edge plunge pools. The rates are high, but the property is quite unique in the market so can get away with it. The spa is a must visit, one of the best I have tried in Australia. For something truly special, book the Beach House. Hamilton Island itself I am not that keen on, but Qualia is in a league of its own.
