Hidden away on 28,000 hectares of remote wilderness and watched over by the magnificent sandstone Mount Mulligan, this lodge is a luxurious and intimate property that offers a taste of outback living in true style.

Sitting in the shadow of the mighty Mount Mulligan, the lodge is a masterclass in rustic yet elegant design and luxurious living at the heart of a wild landscape. With space for just 16 guests it is intimate and welcoming, with a main pavilion hosting meals and relaxation time and a beautiful infinity pool and sunset bar taking you through the day. Each room comes complete with its own electric buggy for travelling across the vast expanse of the property’s land.

Looking out over fragrant eucalyptus and the tranquil waters of the weir to Mount Mulligan, the rooms are pared-back yet elegant, with rich woods and neutral tones creating a natural sanctuary that remains connected to the beauty of the countryside that lies just beyond the large sliding glass doors. Corrugated iron water tanks have been upcycled into deep tubs and set on your private veranda, a relaxing spot for evening sundowners. Televisions are deliberately absent, though air-conditioning, heating, gourmet mini bars and tea and coffee facilities create a home-from-home in the remote outback. With three delicious meals included each day, as well as Australian wines and beers, you could be forgiven for spending all day enjoying the good food and drink served in the main pavilion. Fresh, locally sourced and seasonal, the menu changes daily but brings an imaginative edge to outback flavours, accompanied by renowned Australian wines. The bar is open throughout the day for cocktails by the pool, looking out over the imposing sandstone grandeur of Mount Mulligan. Your time at Mount Mulligan can be spent in idle contemplation of the vast landscape and open skies, or whizzing around 28,000 hectares on an ATV. Paddleboarding and kayaking get you onto the water, while fishing for barramundi is an opportunity to catch your own dinner. You could discover the day-to-day workings of this working cattle station or head out to the abandoned town of Mount Mulligan, a ghostly reminder of the region’s mining past. For a taste of outback living with more than a hint of luxury, Mount Mulligan Lodge is a thoughtfully designed, stylish retreat in beautiful surrounds and within reach of the adventure and history of this remote area.

With three room types, there is an accommodation option for both couples and families. The spacious Outback Room is wonderfully light, with soaring ceilings and shuttered windows from floor-to-ceiling leading onto a large veranda. As with all the rooms, the colours and materials are taken from the natural environment, creating symmetry between the interior and exterior. Similar in style, the Outback Suite brings the additional benefit of an adjoining lounge with wood-burning stove and an outdoor dining table. Ideal for families, the Outback Pavilion features two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a shared lounge and wood-burning stove.

Children of all ages are welcome at Mount Mulligan Lodge though there are no specific facilities for younger guests.

When not dining on freshly caught barramundi and kangaroo, the sun-dappled infinity pool is an inviting proposition, lined with loungers on a wooden deck that offer a view out to the neighbouring weir. The bar and snack station operate on a help-yourself basis, and there are plenty of seating areas for getting away with a book and a cup of tea or a crisp glass of Australian wine. Complimentary wifi keeps you connected in this remote region and each accommodation comes with its own electric buggy for travelling between the main pavilion, sunset bar and room.

In spite of its isolated location, Mount Mulligan offers a range of experiences, from discovering the region’s gold rush history at Tyrconnell gold mine to tracing the history of Mount Mulligan through its cemetery. Spot rainbow lorikeets and friar birds as you explore the vast expanse of outback territory or simply make the most of the unpolluted skies and soak in the dazzling beauty of the southern constellations.
