Winter (June-Aug) is high season in Queensland; the water can be chilly - at least to Australians - but its temperature rarely drops below 22°C. April through October is peak visibility time for divers. Summer is hot and sticky across the state. In North Queensland the monsoonal Wet season is from November or December through March or April. It brings heavy rains, high temperatures, extreme humidity, and cyclones. It's no problem to visit then, and the Wet or "Green" season allows an unusual opportunity to explore this region during a truly balmy time of monsoonal calms.

Thala Beach Nature Reserve, a member of National Geographic Unique Lodges of the World, is a charming boutique lodge located on the spectacular coastal road between Cairns and Port Douglas in Tropical North Queensland.
The views from Thala Beach Nature Reserve of this World Heritage coastline are second to none. Located where the Daintree Rainforest meets the Great Barrier Reef over 145 acres and designed with the aesthetics of its beautiful natural surroundings in mind, Thala’s deluxe timber frame bungalows blend into the vegetation and provide a luxurious sense of privacy. There is a spectacular 2km sandy beach and secluded coves as well as the diverse nature of the rainforest to explore and, of course, the largest coral reef in the world is yours to discover. A lovely option for those wanting a barefoot, rustic experience.
The Bungalows here have been designed to blend with nature and are built from sustainable materials. Chose from the Jungle Walk Bungalows which are far from the resort's hub and are peaceful and secluded within the forest, Eucalypt Bungalows which feel like luxurious bird hides - beautiful butterflies and tropical birds are often easily seen from the balcony which is in the rainforest canopy, or the Coral Sea Bungalow with ocean views. If you want the ultimate in privacy and romance choose the Sandpiper Suite with its spacious interior and large balcony overlooking Thala Beach Nature Reserve's two deserted beaches.
Ospreys Restaurant is a memorable experience, not only for the delicious and innovative fresh cuisine but also for the setting - high up in the treetops you dine with the birds and have uninterrupted views for over 100km. The Masked Plover cocktail bar is a relaxed, fun place for a cocktail and a chat about the day's explorations and for a more casual meal with your toes in the sand try Herbie's Beach Shack, fresh seafood, stunning sunsets and cold beer aplenty.
Thala Beach Nature Reserve has two free form swimming pools with grottoes, waterfalls and Jacuzzi's built in, as well as a relaxing health spa. However, if you can tear yourself away from the comforts of the resort, the surrounding area has a plethora of adventures and activities waiting to be discovered from bird watching, trekking through the jungle and guided nature walks inland, to kayaking, fishing, diving, island hopping and enjoying the wonders of the Great Barrier Reef out at sea.
Thala offers four different types of accommodation which have been designed to compliment and blend with the environment: Jungle Walk Bungalows which are located deep within the forest, Eucalypt Bungalows which are perched among the tree canopies, Coral Sea Bungalows with views over and through the treetops to the ocean and the Sandpiper Suite perched on the headland with views over two beaches. All of the en-suite deluxe timber bungalows have air conditioning, TVs/DVD and private verandas.
Children are very welcome at Thala Beach Lodge and the surrounding rainforest and reef will provide children and their families with an inexhaustible range of activities and adventures. The swimming pools here are great for children as they have grottoes and waterfalls and the relaxed nature of the lodge and the great service mean that families will be made to feel at home.
Ospreys Port Douglas Restaurant serves fabulous cuisine high in the treetops with stunning views and Herbie's Beach Shack is the perfect spot to dine on fresh seafood or watch the sunset with your bare feet in the sand. Picnics can be enjoyed on your balcony or at the beach. Thala has two freeform swimming pools, over 2km of private sandy beaches and coves, an adventure desk for organising experiences and excursions, a boutique, health spa and an art gallery.
Thala offers all guests bird watching, star gazing, wildlife talks and cultural talks on a complimentary basis but please be aware they run on a schedule. Ask your Travel Consultant to book some exciting experiences for you. In addition there are boat trips to the Great Barrier Reef, scuba diving, private guided rainforest walks, nearby golf, sea kayaking, turtle spotting, yoga and meditation sessions and cooking lessons.

Conveniently located in a rainforest and right by the ocean, Thala Beach Nature Reserve is a charming retreat near Port Douglas, Queensland. The property is made up of over 80 cottages, all of which are adorned with wicker furniture, wooden shutters and a private balcony. It offers a wonderful opportunity to explore the Great Barrier Reef, learn about the local wildlife and go on some beautiful nature walks. Although there is a lovely swimming pool by the main restaurant, as well as a small store and art gallery, the property is definitely for those looking for a barefoot experience. For example, there isn't any wifi in the cottages, so you need to head up to the main lodge to access the Internet.

Take a turning off the road between Cairns and Port Douglas and you arrive at Thala Beach Lodge, surrounded by ancient rainforest and golden beaches. The accommodation reflects the age of the property, and you don’t come here if you want lots of flash facilities, but if you want a wonderful bird watching and wildlife experience, then you will probably love it. Included in the rates are guided nature walks, use of the outdoor observatory for wonderful stargazing and talks by the local aboriginal tribe. Having a drink or a meal up in the treetop restaurant is a treat - incredible panoramic views.
Private Yacht Charter on the Barrier Reef
A full day sail and snorkel cruise aboard a luxuriously appointed sailing catamaran is a great way to experience the Great Barrier Reef. Relax as your yacht is nudged casually along by tropical breezes in the balmy waters of the reef.
