Best time to Visit

Good time to visit

Average time to visit

For a small country, Jordan has an extraordinary range of climates. The best time to visit climate-wise is in spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November), when the daytime temperatures aren't too extreme. April is probably the best month, when temperatures are warm and wildflowers are in bloom. March can be cold and rainy in the north but is balmy by the Gulf of Aqaba and the Dead Sea.

Insider's View

Don't miss Petra by candlelight

Petra Kitchen is a great way to spend an evening learning how to make delicious Jordanian food. I was seriously impressed by my results!

Try to get up as early as possible for your Petra sightseeing - there won't be nearly as many people, it'll be cooler and the sunlight is beautiful.

The Movenpick is ideally located opposite the entrance to the Petra site. The hotel is a mixture of Arabic and international design. There are a number of facilities including a pool and choice of restaurants, providing a comfortable base for exploring.

The Movenpick offers 183 rooms and suites. Whilst the rooms do not perhaps have huge amounts of character, they are perfectly comfortable, and provide all that you need for a pleasant stay for a few nights.

The main areas of the hotel are more Arabic in style, including intricate tiles and carved wooden panels and window trellises. The hotel has a good range of facilities, including an outdoor pool, fully equipped gym and steam rooms. There are a number of restaurants to choose from, including Al Iwan, which serves Mediterranean and Arabic cuisine by candlelight, the ornately decorated Al Maqa'ad Bar and the cosy Al Baraka Tea Room. During summer the Al Ghadeer Roof Garden provides an atmospheric place to enjoy a sundowner and live music.

The location of the hotel is wonderfully convenient. Not only is the hotel right beside the entrance to Petra, it is also within walking distance of Petra Kitchen, as well as the others bars and restaurants in the town.

There are 183 rooms and suites, all of which have en-suite bathrooms and modern amenities such as TV, air-conditioning, Wi-Fi and tea and coffee making facilities. All rooms also feature a complimentary mini bar.

The rooms are modern, however it is worth being aware that modern design in Jordan can still feel somewhat dated compared to other international hotels in the Middle East.

Children are welcome to come and stay at Movenpick Resort Petra. However, there are no specific facilities available for them at the hotel. Extra beds can be added to bedrooms to accommodate families. Babysitting can be arranged upon request.

The Movenpick Resort Petra has a good range of facilities including an outdoor pool and a fully equipped gym. The hotel has a extentsive range of treatments in the spa and you can enjoy the Turkish baths and enjoy a full Hammam experience.

There are a number of restaurants to choose from, ranging from international buffets to candlelit Arabic cuisine. There are some great options for lighter bites, including the Caravan Stop Shop, which offers sandwiches and pastries, the Al Baraka Tea Room which serves refreshments in a cosy setting, and the Al Maqa'ad Bar, with an extensive drinks menu and light snacks.

The Movenpick Resort Petra is a matter of steps from the entrance to the Rose-Red City. It is also just around the corner from Petra Kitchen. Little Petra is a short drive away, and Wadi Rum and Aqaba are within a two-hour drive.

The location of the Movenpick Resort Petra couldn't be better - it is just across the road from the Petra Visitor Centre and entrance into the site. Whilst the public areas of the hotel, such as the lounges and atrium, have an Arabian style with intricate balconies, tile decorations and elaborate furniture, the rooms are a much more standard international style.

It is worth noting that some of the restaurants and bars are seasonal, so for example the roof top terrace is amazing for a cocktail in summer but is closed during the winter season.

The food in the hotel's buffet restaurant is perfectly acceptable, but isn't the best, and there are plenty of restaurants nearby for those who like to venture out in the evenings.

Handily located at the gates to Petra, this comfortable hotel has a spectacular neo-Damascene-style atrium with carved wooden balconies, a tinkling fountain and an exotic-looking ground-floor bar, but for peace and ice-cream the fourth-floor tearoom wins hands down.

This hotel is located right next to the entrance to the Petra site, making it my first choice every time for a stay here. I would say that it is also the best choice quality-wise. The only detriment was that when I stayed here, the bath plug didn't keep the water in!

The Movenpcik is the most popular hotel in Petra. It is well known for its excellent location next to the entrance to the Old City, this made such a difference to my stay in Petra as the Old City is the highlight for tourists visiting Jordan. The standard of hotels in Petra is not up to the Four Seasons in Amman or the Kempinski at the Dead Sea but the Movenpick is the closest you will get to experiencing similar luxuries.

The roof top bar/restaurant is a fantastic place to relax after a long day of sight seeing. From this hotel you have the option of visiting the Petra Kitchen for cookery classes and petra by candlelight.

  • Jeep Ride in Wadi Rum

Wadi Rum offers stunning vistas, wide open spaces and fascinating natural rock structures. You will have a one-hour jeep ride here to visit the Khazali Canyon, the rock bridges, Lawrence of Arabia's house and ancient Nabataean inscriptions.

  • Kerak Castle

Built in 1161 by the Crusaders, Kerak is a perfect example of mediaeval castle design. The castle is a dark maze of stone-vaulted halls and passageways. Its most famous occupant was Reynald de Chatillon, who had a reputation for treachery and brutality.

  • Madaba

Known as the City of Mosaics, Madaba is most famous for the Church of St George which contains a superb mosaic map of the Holy Land dating from 560AD. There is an interesting visitors' centre which explains the map in more detail.

  • Mt Nebo

According to the Bible, in the book of Deuteronomy, Mount Nebo is where the prophet Moses was shown the Promised Land for the Hebrew people. Today, the site contains a church and impressive mosaic collection.

Petra by Night occurs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at 8.30pm. You enter the Siq, and the canyon which leads to the Treasury.

  • Petra Kitchen

Short taster course into the delights of Jordanian cooking.

  • Showbak Castle

Showbak is an isolated Crusader castle, located around an hour north of Petra. Whilst it is more dilapidated than other castles such as Kerak, the setting is very dramatic; perched on a hillside and offering extensive views of the surrounding area.

  • Tour of Petra with a Local Guide

A two-hour tour of Petra with a private local guide which will include a walk through the Siq before moving to the Treasury (El Khazneh), the intricately carved Royal Tombs, Street of the Facades and finishing at Qasr al Bint.
