Each of the guesthouses at Akademie are hidden away behind high hedges, which wrap around the gardens and pools, and offer privacy and seclusion for all guests. Three of the cottages have their own private garden and swimming pool and the other three share a large solar heated pool. All of the guesthouses are joined together through winding, vine covered pathways which all meet at Twyfeling, the Cape Dutch main home. Breakfast is complimentary and is usually served at the main house under a pergola entwined with grape vines.
Franschhoek village situated in the heart of the winelands and is surrounded by some of South Africa's oldest wine estates, and Akademie Street provides a wonderful escape for anyone looking to explore the winelands and the surrounding villages. Franschhoek has nearly forty restaurants or sidewalk cafes where one can idle one’s time away. The village is a peaceful and safe place to walk, even at night, and there are also a whole host of activities to keep you entertained such as bike rides, horse rides, mountain walks and fly fishing - all within minutes of the hotel. The lovely hosts of Akademie Street, Katherine and Arthur are always happy to book any of these for you and answer any questions you may have.

Akademie Street has three guest cottages, each with their own private pool and gardens. There are also three suites, two in the main house and one in a separate building next to the main house. All of the rooms and cottages have been uniquely decorated and furnished with appealing mixture of antique and contemporary decor.
Twyfeling A is a self-contained, Cape Dutch style house with a large living room, a library and two large, light-filled bedroom suites at opposite ends of the house. The beds are doubles but twin beds can be organized at prior notice. Twyfeling A shares the pool and garden with the Uitsig and Twyfeling B.
Twyfeling B is situated in Twyfeling main house, a Cape Dutch style house with a living room, library and breakfast areas. It has two private, large bedroom suites at opposite ends of the house. The suites have a private conservatory room with spectacular views out to the mountains.
Twyfeling A shares the pool and garden with the Uitsig and Twyfeling B.
Uitsig is a private suite, next to the main Twyfeling House. The French doors open out onto a private balcony with fantastic views over the Franschhoek valleys. There is one double bedroom with an en-suite bathroom with under floor heating and a bath and separate shower. The double bed can be made into two single beds upon prior request.
Uitsig shares a large solar heated pool the garden with the two suites in Twyfeling.
Oortuiging is an atmospheric Franschhoek cottage built in the Cape Dutch style. This cottage has two en-suite bedrooms, a lounge, a kitchen and a dining room. There is also a private pool and garden. A third bed can be put in one of the rooms upon prior request.
Vreugde is a one-bedroom, garden cottage with a large double bed but with prior notice twin beds can be organized. The room is en-suite with a bath and a separate shower and there is a small kitchenette. French doors open out onto a wide veranda with a beautiful, private garden and small pool.
Gelatenheid is a spacious double storey guest house with a private balcony overlooking the winelands, Franschhoek and the surrounding mountains. It has a large loft area with an open plan bedroom/sitting room and en-suite bathroom. In a secluded corner of the balcony, there is an outdoor bath and downstairs, there is a lounge and kitchenette area with French doors leading out onto a veranda and a large, private pool.
Children of all ages are welcome at Akademie Street and cots can be provided for very young children upon request.
There is a lounge area with a television and a library area with a selection of books for guests to relax during the evenings. There is also a tennis court and a gym. All rooms have heating for the cooler months and air conditioning for when it gets warmer. There is WiFi throughout the hotel and international plugs can be found in all of the rooms.
There are a whole host of activities to do in and around Franschhoek and guests can choose to do as much or as little as they desire. With 8 of South Africa's top 100 restaurants located in the village, there is never a shortage of fantastic options to enjoy a romantic supper or cafes to sit and watch the world go by.

When to go
The Winelands are a wonderful year-round destination and enjoys a mild Mediterranean climate, somewhat like the South of France, which is what makes the area perfect for grape-growing. Summer in Franschhoek is the reverse of the Northern hemisphere. The best season visit is September to March when it is hot, sunny and dry. From April to August it cools down with some rain.
