Description

Beho Beho, meaning “gentle breeze”, is situated in the cooler highlands of the Selous Game Reserve and is the perfect safari refuge for those guests looking for a combination of untouched wilderness, outstanding hospitality and expert guiding, arguably some of the best in Tanzania. The main lodge includes a large open sided lounge/dining area and, together with the cocktail bar and ’billiards room’, it provides a sophisticated setting for post safari relaxation. The raised swimming pool and decking is an ideal place to cool off during the heat of the day.

Accommodation consists of eight open-fronted guest bandas built of local stone and palm leaf thatch, with en-suite facilities including an open-air shower. Each spacious banda has a lounge area and private veranda with magnificent views over the woodland, open glades and gorges below. There is also a beautiful treehouse, ideal for a romantic sleepout under the stars.

From the lodge, guests can explore a unique combination of habitats, including riverine forest, miombo woodland, open plains and the fascinating lake regions of Tagalala and Mwanze. As well as game drives, guided walking safaris are a speciality and usually undertaken in the early morning or late afternoon. There are also a number of boats stationed at Lake Tagalala, which provide an opportunity to view the resident hippos and crocodiles at close quarters, as well as an amazing number of birds.

Families or groups of friends traveling together can opt for the privacy of Bailey's Banda, the family house at Beho Beho. With a private guide and vehicle at your disposal, and accommodating four guests, it is a great option for those looking for a little more privacy on their safari.

Accommodation

Beho Beho has eight individual very spacious Bandas, (stone built and palm thatched cottages) furnished with king-sized beds, Zanzibari day beds, writing desks and comfortable 'suite' furniture. The front of the banda is totally open and extends on to a spacious verandah. The banda can be secured for the night with 'tented curtains' or left open as desired. Each banda has a separate dressing room leading into an en suite bathroom with twin basins, high flush WC and an 'open air' shower.

Bailey's Banda is the private house, and although still part of the main camp it does have its own driveway enabling guests to have an entirely private safari experience if they wish. With two double bedrooms in a similar style to the rooms of the main lodge it also boasts its own living room, bar and private swimming pool. The house comes with its own dedicated team of staff to look after guests every need.

Banda

There are 8 bandas which each have a spacious double bedroom with dressing area and en-suite bathroom. The bandas are open at the front and all have a large verandah with seating.

Childcare

It is felt that this style of camp is not suitable for young children and there is a minimum age of 12 years. Children (over 12 years) who have an interest in wildlife and who are comfortable in an adult environment thoroughly enjoy the camp.

Facilities

The open sided lounge and dining areas together with the cocktail bar and 'billiards room' provide a sophisticated setting for post safari relaxation and the swimming pool and deck an ideal place to cool off.

Activities

The main activity on offer is guided walking and game drives - the vehicles are specially adapted 4WD vehicles which offer raised seating for better game viewing. Game drives are best taken early in the morning or at dusk. It is also possible to visit Lake Tagalala & Maji Moto - after a short drive you will arrive at Lake Tagalala for your boating safari. The lake is surrounded by a number of natural springs which attracts amazing birdlife as well as a large hippo and crocodile population. The quality of guiding at Beho Beho is second-to-none, and one of the real selling points for staying here on safari.

Location & Directions

Selous Game Reserve, Tanzania

Beho Beho camp is in the Northern sector of the Selous game reserve, it perches on the lower slopes of Namikwera Hill overlooking Kipalala Hill, offer panoramic views over the Rufiji river flood plain. 145 miles south west of Dar es Salaam, as the crow flies, the camp is 3 miles from the grave of Frederick Courteney Selous.

When to go

Beho Beho is closed from mid March to early June.

Tanzania is a large country, with a varied climate. Generally, the long rains run from March to May - the temperature is warm and the humidity is high. June to October is the long dry season, and the short rains are in November and December, much lighter than the long rains. January and February are again dry (the short dry season) so this is another good time to visit.
