Discover Ragusa with an Art Historian
Damaged by an earthquake in 1693, the town was rebuilt on a steep slope, suggesting to the local architects some of the great scenic effects of its renowned outstanding architecture. Visit the Saint George’s gate (portale di San Giorgio), unique testimony of the ancient mother church, and the Iblei Gardens financed by three noblemen from Ragusa. Continue to Piazza Pola and admire the church of San Giuseppe, with its typical tower façade. Finally reach the church of San Giorgio, built by Rosario Gagliardi, whose majesty is enchanting. During the visit, stop at the atelier of a Sicilian cart master, used throughout the island as a means of transport until the second half of the 20th century and nowadays considered a true work of art.
