Top Rome Landmarks and Things to See

With a history as long and culturally significant as Rome, the landmarks here more than just sightseeing, it’s stepping back in time. From the Colosseum and Vatican City to grand piazzas, these are just some of the top sites to experience in the Eternal City.

Colosseum

The Colosseum has stood at the heart of Rome for almost 2,000 years, once hosting gladiatorial contests and public spectacles for thousands of spectators. Today, its soaring arches encircling its vast arena gives visitors a glimpse into the Rome that once was.

Scott Dunn offers private Colosseum tours led by an archaeologist who can take you through the history of this icon of Rome and give you behind-the-scenes insights into its ancient engineering. After your tour, we recommend exploring the Colosseum further with a virtual reality experience that recreates the arena at the height of its grandeur.
Vatican City

Home to the Vatican Museums, the Sistine Chapel and St Peter's Basilica, Vatican City houses one of the world's greatest collections of art and is the papal seat of Catholic religious heritage. It's one of Rome's most visited attractions, but careful planning with Scott Dunn can help you experience the best of the Vatican.

With exclusive early morning or after-hours tours of the Vatican museums, you'll enjoy quieter galleries while an expert guide shares the stories behind celebrated masterpieces. For art lovers, this can also be paired with a visit to the Borghese Gallery or a private walking tour through Rome's Baroque streets.
Trevi Fountain

The Trevi Fountain is easily the most famous fountain in Europe, often lined with visitors waiting to toss in their coin. This elaborate Baroque masterpiece carved from travertine stone features a cacophony of mythic figures with Neptune (god of the sea) stood front and centre.

Take a tour with art historian to discover the symbolism behind its sculptures and fountains, along with other sites in Rome’s historic centre. Trevi Fountain is busiest during the day, but if you come by for an evening stroll you can enjoy this masterwork with far less crowds.
Pantheon

Originally commissioned by Emperor Hadrian, the Pantheon remains one of the best-preserved buildings from ancient Rome. Its famous concrete dome and central oculus continue to impress visitors almost two thousand years after they were built.

Explore with a private guide who can take you through the remarkable engineering behind this former Roman temple. As the Pantheon remains an active church, visitor access is restricted during religious services, and we'll arrange your visit at the best time to make the most of your experience.
Roman Forum

Once the political, commercial and ceremonial heart of ancient Rome, the Roman Forum was where emperors, senators and citizens shaped the course of the empire. Explore the ruins with an archaeologist who helps piece together the stories behind each monument, from the Via Sacra and Arch of Titus to the figures who once walked these streets, including Julius Caesar and Mark Antony.

The best area depends on how you want to experience the city. Stay in Centro Storico to be within walking distance of Rome's top historic landmarks, choose Monti for boutique hotels and a more local atmosphere, or base yourself near Via del Babuino for luxury shopping and elegant five-star hotels.
