Day 5 - Cradle Mountain Huts Walk: Kia Ora Hut to Windy Ridge Hut
Cradle Mountain National Park
Today you will swap mountainous peaks for thundering waterfalls. From Kia Ora Hut it’s a gentle one hour walk through temperate forest to Du Cane, where a traditional hunters hut from the early 20th century still stands strong.
Surrounded by native gardens and shadowed by the spectacular Du Cane Range, this is the ideal place to rest weary legs before continuing your penultimate days walk.
After lunch walk through a 2000-year-old native pine forest high above the Mersey River and home to some of the tracks most impressive waterfalls. Time permitting you will have the opportunity to see one or two of the forests waterfalls where thundering water plummets down the cliff faces into The Mersey River below.
The final section of todays walk will see you cross Du Cane Gap beside the spectacular Falling Mountain towards Windy Ridge Hut, your base of tonight. Enjoy a celebratory dinner this evening at your camp to celebrate your last evening on the Overland Track.
