Founded as a monastery in the fourteenth century and later used as a palace retreat for the Portuguese Royal Family, today Penha Longa is still an impressive sight, nestled among green forested hillsides and overlooked by the Sintra Mountains.
All 194 of the hotel's rooms have a balcony to make the most of the beautiful views across the national park. The decor is luxurious but comfortable and the facilities are extensive, including a 27-hole golf course, six restaurants, indoor and outdoor swimming pools and an incredible spa and wellness center which spans over 1500 square meters.
With all these facilities to hand it will be tempting to spend all your time at the hotel, but it is well worth hiring a car and exploring the area too. This region of Portugal retains an authentic atmosphere and the miles of sandy beaches are still relatively untouched by the mass tourism of the south coast. The closest town, Sintra, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and makes for a wonderful day trip to discover the Moorish architecture and cobbled streets lined with cafes and small boutiques. Cascais and Lisbon are also within easy reach.
It's worth noting that as Penha Longa is located in a valley at the foot of the Sintra Mountains it does have its own microclimate at certain times of the year. May and September are particularly lovely times to visit.
Penha Longa offers 194 guest rooms, all of which come with a balcony overlooking the resort gardens and forested hillsides beyond. Larger suites and connecting rooms are also available.
Penha Longa welcomes families and is ideal for children of all ages. There is a dedicated Kid's Club, with activities on offer ranging from fancy dress, picnics and camping, painting, cinema, cooking classes, fashion nights, pyjama parties and horse riding. A kids' menu is available in most restaurants and there are interconnecting room options. Babysitting is available on request.
Dining at Penha Longa is an experience in itself. The hotel offers six restaurants including the fine dining "LAB by Sergi Arola", "Midori", one of the best Japanese restaurants in the country, "Arola", serving traditional Portuguese and Spanish tapas and "Il Mercato", specializing in Italian dishes.
The hotel's 27-hole golf course is designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. and is ranked as one of the top 30 courses in Europe. A host of other activities are also on offer, including horse riding and trekking in the national park, surfing and jeep tours.

When to go
The south of Portugal has a mild climate with more than 300 days of sunshine a year. The weather is generally warm and sunny in May with the risk of the odd shower of rain. Sometimes it can be cool in the evenings. By June the weather generally settles in a pattern of long hot sunny days and balmy evenings especially in July and August. Rain is unlikely but it can happen from time to time. Throughout the summer months it can be windy especially during the afternoon. June and September are particularly pleasurable months.
