Kviknes is one of a kind; the largest and oldest pre-fabricated building in Norway, though you wouldn’t think it to look at given its imposing size, characterful rooms and general sense of grandeur.
The white edifice sits majestically above the fjord and takes advantage of amazing views morning, noon and night. Over breakfast, gaze out across the water as the sun rises, relax in the arts and crafts style salon and watch the sun shimmer across the fjord after a vigorous hike and, by night, relax in the bar area amidst the remains of an old grand villa, whose great hall panelling was salvaged and erected at Kviknes to great effect.
The historic rooms in the main building are much sought after for their fjord views and old fashioned style, as opposed to those in the austere and soulless annex wing. If Kviknes appeals, we highly recommend the historic rooms, where you can make the most of a wooden balcony, spacious sitting area and bathroom, although the latter is by no means modern. History and ambience are foremost here rather than luxury, giving guests a real sense of a bygone era.
Meals are served in the vast dining room which almost feels like a cruise ship with a cornucopia of superb food served in buffet style. The hotel does tend to attract large groups but the staff do their best to keep smaller parties and couples apart so you can enjoy your stay in privacy should you prefer.
The wine cellar is the pride of Sigurd Kviknes, who boasts that a famous Puligny Montrachet can be enjoyed for less than one would pay in mainland Europe. Why you may ask? Because alcohol is taxed at a flat rate in Norway!
Staying at Kviknes means you are perfectly placed for exploring on foot or by boat – private or public. The fjord in all its glory is there to be enjoyed, and where better to return to after a day's adventure than a cosy antique chair that Kaiser Wilhelm may himself have once sat in!
There are 27 historic rooms in the main building which we recommend, each with spectacular views of the fjord and most with their own balcony. The wing where the bulk of the other rooms are is charm-less, so the historic rooms are highly sought after.
Interconnecting rooms are available, ideal for families.
|Standard Room- Modern Building||
Standard rooms come either with queen beds or twin beds and have a separate seating area. Many have their own private balconies and enjoy partial views of the fjord and the impressive surrounding mountains. Rooms adapted for wheelchair users are available.
|Rooms - Modern Building||
All of these double or twin rooms boast balconies from which to enjoy the impressive fjordland scenery. Each has either queen or twin beds.
|Rooms- Historic Building||
Each historic room has its own character and many enjoy a private balcony with views over Sognefjord. Some rooms can be interconnected, with two rooms sharing a bathroom.
The wine cellar at Kviknes Hotel is renowned and with good reason; it is the largest and most varied in Sognefjord. At dinner, a buffet four course menu is served in the main restaurant while Balholm Bar bistro offers children's favorites as well as typical dishes.
With a fjord side setting, boat trips and kayaking are of course on the cards. Amazing hiking too is on offer, as well as interesting sightseeing locally. The location of the hotel right in the middle of the largest Norwegian fjord, Sognefjord, makes this the perfect base for the plethora of activities the Norwegian fjords have to offer.
Hiking gear is highly recommended – boot or trainers, waterproof kit and gloves will be essential if you want to venture on proper hikes.

Kviknes hotel is on the West Coast of Norway. It is located in the municipality of Balestrand located on the world renowned and largest Norwegian fjord; Sognefjord.
When to go
The hotel is normally open from the 1st May, when the scenery is beautiful with trees in blossom and in the backdrop the mountains still have a covering of powder snow. The weather is usually pleasant in May but there is a bit of contrast and snow is possible. The summer season is the best time to go. Towards the end of September there are less tourists and the weather turns cooler but the Fall colors are wonderful. Being on the West Coast of Norway the weather can be quite varied though throughout the year.
