The Maldives has a tropical climate distinguished by two seasons, or monsoons: the dry northeast monsoon from December to March, and the wet southwestern monsoon from May to November, with more strong winds and rain. April is a transitional period noted for clear water and heat. The temperature remains remarkably consistent at around 30°C.
February to April is the hottest period and resorts are almost all operating at capacity during this period. Mid-December to early January comes at even more of a premium due to Christmas and New Year and prices are even higher. Easter and the Italian vacation week in August also attract peak prices at most resorts.
Storms are more likely from May to November, though it’s still warm, skies can be cloudy and the humidity is higher. This is the low season, with fewer people and lower prices, with the exception of August.
Diving is good year-round, although a basic rule is that life on the reef is more varied and visibility better on the western side of any atoll from May to November and from the eastern side of any atoll December to April.
The surfing season runs from March to October, which is when resorts are cheapest.

Velaa Private Island is a super-luxury boutique hideaway on the Noonu Atoll in the Maldives. Offering just 45 exclusive villas and residences, Velaa is considered by many to be the finest resort in the Maldives, with the price tag to match.
There comes a seminal moment for any destination when a hotel opens that dramatically raises the bar in terms of its sheer style and exclusivity. Alongside Cheval Blanc which opened in the same year, Velaa Private Island is widely recognised as having taken Maldivian luxury to a whole new level.
Every possible detail has been considered in its design, and they have certainly learned from other resorts in the Maldives, taking the best bits of each and incorporating them into the island's makeup. Where other resorts have either been too stuffy with a feel that is a little over the top, or some overly barefoot, Velaa has crested the wave and the result is that the overall atmosphere here is exceptionally well balanced.
Velaa has just 45 picture-perfect thatched villas and residences, making the resort feel exceptionally boutique and exclusive. You can choose from either beach or over-water villas, all with private pools. There has been clever attention to retaining a sense of privacy, yet providing lots of space to relax, by including large terraces and gazebos. All rooms feature a clever blend of dark mahogany panelling with a dash of contemporary color and sleek-lined teak furniture making them earthy, homely and elegant. There are four beach categories starting with the Beach Pool Villas, with wonderful high ceilings and bamboo lighting opening out to a terrace and private pool. The Deluxe Beach Pool Villas are larger and feature a separate living room. The Beach Pool Houses contain two bedrooms and are ideal for families. The Velaa Private Residence is even larger, with four bedrooms, 1,350 meters of indoor space including a vast pool, a gym and spa room. Moving to the over-water option, you can stay in the Sunrise or Sunset Water Pool Villa, the larger two-bedroom Ocean Pool House or the Romantic Pool Residence which is only accessible by boat and provides the pinnacle of over-water living.
The cuisine at Velaa Island is a major USP, with three exceptional restaurants. The Athiri and Avi Bar provides all-day beach-front dining and provides a range of dishes from wood-fired pizzas to fresh salads. Tavaru is located in Velaa Island's own tower at the center of the island, and has a Teppanyaki kitchen where live cooking and a fantastic wine list take center stage. The Arahu & Cru Bar is Velaa Private Islands signature restaurant where guests sip vintage champagne before being wowed by mouth watering Michelin quality fine-dining.
Velaa Private Island does not hold back on the facilities and the experiences it provides. There is a superb spa, run by Clarins. There is the Maldives first snow room, and some sophisticated treatments that are at the cutting edge of wellness treatments.
At the center of the island, you can hone your golf at the Velaa Golf Academy which was designed by Jose Maria Olazabal. There are nine tees, six greens and seven bunkers. The house-reef at Velaa is superb, and the dive center is on hand to help explore this more remote corner of the Maldives and exceptional diving. From trimarans, catamarans, jet skis, sea bob, parasailing and kite surfing, the water sports on offer will satisfy all your aquatic endeavours.
There are 43 private villas, houses and residences and two four-bedroom residences, all with private pools and exceptional interior design. 17 of which are over-water with the Romantic Pool Residence only reached by boat. Velaa Private Island has quite literally blown the old guard apart since it opened in 2014 - and with Cheval Blanc, they are the top two resorts in the Maldives. It does mean it is also the most expensive - and especially in the top four bedroom option. Is it worth it? We think so! It has 45 amazing villas, houses and residences which are wonderfully designed - no expense has been spared on the fixtures and fittings. They aren't at all over-the-top (as you can find in other Maldives resorts), yet not too barefoot - the perfect feel of being contemporary with Maldivian nuances. They all have great outdoor areas, such as terraces to have a meal or a drink and all have large private pools. The food is second to none - and do try the wagyu beef in Aragyu. The house reef is superb (and far better than Reethi Rah for instance). It does feel small, with just 45 villas so is more like a perfect boutique hideaway if anything else.
