The Maldives has a tropical climate distinguished by two seasons, or monsoons: the dry northeast monsoon from December to March, and the wet southwestern monsoon from May to November, with more strong winds and rain. April is a transitional period noted for clear water and heat. The temperature remains remarkably consistent at around 30°C.
February to April is the hottest period and resorts are almost all operating at capacity during this period. Mid-December to early January comes at even more of a premium due to Christmas and New Year and prices are even higher. Easter and the Italian holiday week in August also attract peak prices at most resorts.
Storms are more likely from May to November, though it’s still warm, skies can be cloudy and the humidity is higher. This is the low season, with fewer people and lower prices, with the exception of August.
Diving is good year-round, although a basic rule is that life on the reef is more varied and visibility better on the western side of any atoll from May to November and from the eastern side of any atoll December to April.
The surfing season runs from March to October, which is when resorts are cheapest.

COMO Cocoa Island is a stylish and intimate over water resort located in the South Male atoll, a short speedboat ride from Male. In no time you arrive to this tranquil haven of calm, the perfect place to reflect, relax, unwind and do nothing.
Set on a lush tropical atoll in the Maldives, amongst soft white beaches and crystal clear lagoons, COMO Cocoa Island is the epitome of barefoot chic, yet sophisticated in its luxury.
With only 33 suites and villas on the island, 17 of which are converted dhonis or local fishing boats and 16 being villas it definitely has that sense of a boutique property. Each bungalow is connected by a planked walkway, sitting offshore over the crystal turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean and have been decorated using bleached woods and natural fabrics with Kajan thatched roofs. Blue and white décor further brings the sea, sand and sky into the heart of every room. This is complimented by sublime cuisine at Ufaa, the island's main restaurant which has a relaxed atmosphere, dining by the infinity pool and sea serving Keralan and international style dishes.
COMO Cocoa Island is also home to and an award winning Shambhala Spa offering holistic, Asian-inspired treatments including Ayurveda. In our opinion, this is a small and intimate resort, ideal for getting away from it all.
Just a 50-minute seaplane flight from COMO Cocoa Ialsnd is another fabulous COMO resort, Maalifushi by COMO, offering guests a new and exciting island hopping experience.
COMO Cocoa Island has 33 rooms most of which are uniquely inspired by dhoni boats, the style of vessel used by local fishermen. Adjoined by simple wooden walkways built above the shallow lagoon with a private terrace and steps into a warm Maldivian sea. There are range of villas to choose from, some with two bedrooms more suited to families. All suites and villas include: private sundeck with loungers and dining table, bathtub and separate shower, air conditioning, minibar, coffee and tea facilities, 42 inch satellite TV and DVD player, safe, phone, wifi and iPod docking station.
The eight split-level suites (75m2) stand out for the generous indoor seating area with a Balinese day-bed, large bathroom and private terrace allowing for easy access to the lagoon’s warm waters. Light floods in, the ‘dhoni’-style boat design—the suite doesn’t float but is rather fixed to the lagoon—making you feel as if it’s just you and the sea.
|Dhoni Loft Suite||
These nine rooms (110m2 in size) work very well for families because of an expansive downstairs living area (which doubles up as a sleeping area for children) and then the master bedroom on a mezzanine level, just beneath the rafters. Again the terrace has steps straight into the lagoon.
With private sundecks and full-length windows overlooking the Indian Ocean, these Maldives villas (123m2) bring the outside in. A dramatically elevated loft sequesters a king-sized bed while downstairs on the main level a large and airy sitting area doubles up as a sleeping area for kids.
|One Bedroom Villas||
These four light-filled bungalows (125m2), all of which sit on their own secluded jetty, feature three private al fresco areas: an outdoor shower, a balcony with a daybed, and off the sitting area, which converts into a kid-friendly sleeping area, there’s a sun terrace fitted with a table and pair of loungers.
Approached by a private jetty, each villa (300m2) is arranged with two wings, each with a bedroom (one king, one twin), ensuite bathroom, outdoor shower and private terrace. These wings are connected by living and dining areas with balconies on either side, which allows for step-off-the-deck access to the lagoon.Stay in a COMO Villa and you will experience our personalised butlers. Their role is to ease you through your arrival, organise castaway picnics with the children and arrange meals, becoming your chief activities planners during your stay.
Children are accepted but generally very young children are not encouraged. It is always possible to tailor food and meal times to suit the younger guest and babysitting can also be arranged.
Cocoa beach has a well-equipped gym, a luxurious spa offering a range of relaxing treatments as well as the dive centre and swimming pool.
The casual atmosphere of Ufaa, the main restaurant, contradicts the sophisticated flavours behind each dish. Dine informally beside the infinity pool and the sea, or have meals delivered to your private villa or to your very own private table at the beach. And Faru, the hotel's bar, is the place to relax with fine wines, flavoursome cocktails, healthy juices and light snacks.
The diving is exceptional here and COMO Cocoa Island has a team of instructors available to teach beginners and challenge the experienced. Its also possible to go deep-sea fishing, partake in watersports off the beach, like windsurfing or catamaran sailing. Beach drop-offs, dolphin and sunset cruises or guided snorkelling are also on offer. The island has an award winning spa which offers a range of treatments in one of their four treatment rooms.

COMO Cocoa Island is absolutely beautiful and is the perfect place to go for pure relaxation and a romantic retreat. The food they serve is some of the best food Ive had in the Maldives. At their main restaurant 'UFAA', they serve a menu of delicious interpretations incorporating Indian and Mediterranean cuisines, as well as their well known healthy COMO Shambhala Cuisine.
Even when its at full capacity, youmost likely will have the beach all to yourself and only see other guests at dinner. It's such a stunning and intimate little paradise.

Cocoa feels so intimate and peaceful - I instantly felt more relaxed from the first step off the boat. The fact that it is so easily reached from Male is also a real bonus.
The service is immaculate; the staff are very friendly and helpful. The food was also amazing and the different themes each evening mean you can try a huge variety of cuisines and flavours.
Being able to go straight from your villa deck down into the ocean is a real treat, and snorkelling to where the reef drops off into the deep water is an exciting experience.
The spa is wonderful and the couples treatment rooms are very spacious and have private outdoor bathrooms with large bath tubs.
It is really easy to combine Cocoa with the new COMO property; Maalifushi - it is only a 50-minute seaplane from one to the other and it means you get to experience both islands, which have a really different feel.

Cocoa Island is a unique boutique island in the South Male Atoll, just a 40 minute speed boat journey from Male Airport. It is a truly peaceful retreat, and perfect for those looking for an escape. The spa, hydrotherapy pool and twice daily yoga and meditation sessions will leave you feeling well rested and relaxed. You can snorkel straight to the edge of the excellent house reef from the 33 all over water villas and suites, where you will find abundant marine life.

I love the sense of pure escapism you have at Cocoa, it is a haven for those wanting rest and relaxation. All of the accommodation is set over the water with direct access from your outside deck to the turquoise waters below.
When I stayed here the property was nearly running at full occupancy but it still felt so quiet infact the only time I saw many of the others guests was at dinner in the evening. This island offers guests the chance to totally switch off whether they choose to stay by their suites and snorkel straight from the steps, enjoy a spa treatment at their shambala spa, join a yoga class or simply find a hammock to relax on tucked away into the tress on the beach you will find yourself totally relaxed after a stay here.

This island definitely has the feeling of a boutique hotel, rather than a resort, with just 33 rooms all over water. From your bed, you can step out onto your private terrace into the crystal clear waters below. Despite there only being one restaurant, the range of dishes is very impressive and the quality of food and service, excellent. It is the perfect retreat for those who are looking for a peaceful and relaxing holiday.

Cocoa Island remains one of my favourite smaller properties in The Maldives. As a smaller island, the villas, all situated over the water remind me of Hamptons beach houses, with soft white, wooden and airy interiors and a touch of Asian influence. The island houses a fabulous garden spa, complete with hydrotherapy pool. The bar and restaurant at the other end of the island, situated round the pool, are small and generally quiet, though due to size of the property, a few guests in the bar make things feel quite busy. The food has a very Asian influence, which is worth bearing in mind, though they will be happy to take into account your own preferences to accommodate your personal tastes. For a quiet romantic escape, I think Cocoa Island is hard to beat.
