The Maldives has a tropical climate distinguished by two seasons, or monsoons: the dry northeast monsoon from December to March, and the wet southwestern monsoon from May to November, with more strong winds and rain. April is a transitional period noted for clear water and heat. The temperature remains remarkably consistent at around 30°C.
February to April is the hottest period and resorts are almost all operating at capacity during this period. Mid-December to early January comes at even more of a premium due to Christmas and New Year and prices are even higher. Easter and the Italian holiday week in August also attract peak prices at most resorts.
Storms are more likely from May to November, though it’s still warm, skies can be cloudy and the humidity is higher. This is the low season, with fewer people and lower prices, with the exception of August.
Diving is good year-round, although a basic rule is that life on the reef is more varied and visibility better on the western side of any atoll from May to November and from the eastern side of any atoll December to April.
The surfing season runs from March to October, which is when resorts are cheapest.

Four Seasons at Landaa Giravaaru is a fabulous island. Pairing exquisite Four Seasons service with a laid back island vibe The balance they achieve is just perfect.
I stayed in a Beach Pool Villa and had a snoop around the other villas on offer. I have to say that I think I got the best of the bunch. In addition to the spacious and stylish bedroom and bathroom, the piece de resistance was the outside living area with a mezzanine complete with a daybed and hammock. Had my husband been travelling with me, that would have been his spot! Then there was the pool, which was no measly plunge pool. 12m long and perfect for having a proper swim in!
Throughout my stay I noticed little touches that really give this island the edge. My sunglasses polished at turn-down and left with a perfectly folded cloth next to them; giving your table number in a restaurant and for the rest of your time there, being addressed by name; leaving your bike by the lobby when you go for sunset cocktails, and it magically appearing outside your room by morning! Each thing on it's own is fairly unremarkable, but added all together make for a flawless stay.

This beautiful Four Seasons resort has so much to offer both couples and families. It is also somewhere that you could visit as an individual, especially if you're interested in their Ayurvedic program, they have two Ayurvedic doctors who will give each guest a complimentary consultation and they have programs ranging from a 7 night immersion to a full 21 night programme.
They have complimentary yoga daily and offer anti-gravity yoga and aqua yoga sessions, there is also an outdoor yoga trail with various apparatus dotted around the island. The marine centre here is doing fantastic work to help protect the local marine life, they currently have a large clown fish breeding program to help replenish the population of this sought-after fish following numbers in the ocean dropping drastically as a result of their popularity from the 'Nemo' film.
For watersports lovers you are spoilt for choice with kayaks, stand up paddle boards, hobie cats and the other usual non-motorised water sports you'd expect from a luxury resort, they also have sea bobs which are a fun way of whizzing through the water and kite surfing is available here too.

After spending a few nights at the original Four Seasons in the Maldives (Kuda Huraa), I was dubious as to whether my experience could be topped, but from the moment I was shown to my Beach Villa I knew I was going to be impressed. The villa, which was bigger than my flat in London, came complete with direct access to the beach, a gorgeous outdoor seating area, and also your very own private lap pool - and that was only the outside! Indoors, the villas were absolutely stunning, with gorgeous interior designs having just been recently renovated. Although the island is much bigger than its sister Kuda Huraa, the Four Seasons service has not been lost within its size and for me Landaa Giraavaru definitely has the WOW factor.

Having just returned from my second visit I was reassured of the Four Seasons exquisite service and stylish villas. Upon arrival we were shown straight to our spacious Beach Villa with Pool (a proper lap pool not a plunge pool!) complete with outdoor shower and palatial open air sitting rooms and upper lounge daybed with views over the beach and sea.
As the island is larger than many and would be quite something to get around on by foot in the midday heat, each guest is provided with a bicycle, personalised with your own initials - and a method of working any over indulgences.
The addition of the new Seabar is the best place on the island to sip evening cocktails in an Ibiza'esqe atmosphere, while for me, the wonderful Italian Blu Restaurant, Bar and beach was my favourite place to eat in the evening and drink and sunbath during the day.
While we sadly were not called - we also LOVED the 'Manta on Call' service - guests registering for this during the season (June - December) are given a dedicated mobile phone should the Manta research team find any Manta, the guest is called and given 15 minutes to get to the jetty with their snorkelling gear and taken to the spot where hopefully the Manta will still be. An amazing experience for anyone.
The extensive Marine Discovery Centre is a must for any budding marine Biologists and is home to a touch a feel pool, tropical fish breeding project and turtle rehabilitation centre where injured sea turtles are nursed back to health before being released back into the wild.
With a young adults club as well as very well facilitated kids club I'd recommend this property to families who like plenty to do with a bit of glamour and the opportunity to wear a pair of heels in the evening.

The second of the Four Seasons properties to open in The Maldives, Landaa Giraavaru has gone for big impressive villas and modern design with plenty of contemporary twists. Ideal for older families in particular, there are plenty of activities to keep the whole family busy and the dining options in particular are fantastic. We like the Beach Villa, larger than the Bungalows and of the better side of the island with the better beach. The Water Villas are super too and for larger groups the Land and Ocean Villas are ideal, with plenty of space and privacy.
