Best time to Visit

Good time to visit

Average time to visit

The Maldives has a tropical climate distinguished by two seasons, or monsoons: the dry northeast monsoon from December to March, and the wet southwestern monsoon from May to November, with more strong winds and rain. April is a transitional period noted for clear water and heat. The temperature remains remarkably consistent at around 30°C.

February to April is the hottest period and resorts are almost all operating at capacity during this period. Mid-December to early January comes at even more of a premium due to Christmas and New Year and prices are even higher. Easter and the Italian holiday week in August also attract peak prices at most resorts.

Storms are more likely from May to November, though it’s still warm, skies can be cloudy and the humidity is higher. This is the low season, with fewer people and lower prices, with the exception of August.

Diving is good year-round, although a basic rule is that life on the reef is more varied and visibility better on the western side of any atoll from May to November and from the eastern side of any atoll December to April.

The surfing season runs from March to October, which is when resorts are cheapest.

Soneva Fushi is the ultimate in barefoot luxury with a range of secluded private villas all with their own beach gardens. Soneva Fushi is set in the remote Baa Atoll in the Maldives with access to some of the best dive spots in the world.

Soneva are the pioneers of ’intelligent luxury’ in the Maldives; nowhere else evokes the Crusoe style better than this exemplary resort. The resort is set on the privately owned tropical island of Kunfunadhoo in Baa Atoll. It can be reached by a scenic 30-minute seaplane flight from Malé.

Apart from the crystal clear waters, white beaches and tropical climate, the island’s unusually rich vegetation offers a unique natural experience. The very spacious and stylish villas are built from wood and palm thatch, beautifully furnished with natural materials yet containing every conceivable luxury and they are nestled on the palm-fringed beaches that lead to the azure lagoon contained within a coral reef.

The service is faultless and the food divine, although it is the sense of privacy that comes from having only 65 villas on an island a mile long that continues to make Soneva Fushi one of our favourites.

Central to the property is the Spa experience. The Soneva Fushi Spa has a large reflecting pond and waterfalls which calmly set the tone for soul therapy. Guests may choose from a refreshing menu of holistic and traditional treatments conducted by highly skilled therapists using all natural products. Spa programmes are complimented by a complete gym, beach side treatment villas and a Yoga Pavilion for wellness therapies such as yoga and Tai Chi.

Not content to rest on its laurels, Soneva Fushi has introduced innovations such as an organic tree top restaurant, private spa suites, an open air cinema and the beaituful 'Out of the Blue' overwtaer restaurant  to keep their unique island concept feeling fresh.

Soneva Fushi was designed as a special place for all ages, and as such it was only a matter of time before one of the best kids clubs in the Maldives opened it's brightly coloured doors for business. The Den is a base for kids of all ages, with two swimming pools, a pirate ship, a Mocktail bar, a whole room full of Lego, a cinema, a dress up area; there is even a music room filled with instruments for little people to jam on!

Of course, the Den is a base, but Soneva Fushi has a lot to discover beyond the confines of the club, and so there are a host of activities that can be enjoyed as a family such as a family dolphin cruise, snorkelling with a marine biologist, mother and daughter spa sessions, and a magical bedtime star gazing session at the observatory with the resident astronomer. This really is a kids club operating at another level!

The facilities here seem endless, In the organic gardens Soneva have built an observatory which houses a striking Meade RCX400 telescope. There are two libraries offering a vast selection of easy reading and reference books. There is a fully equipped fitness centre, table tennis, badminton, tennis, beach volleyball and bicycles are also on offer.

Mihiree mitha is the resort's main restaurant where you can enjoy delicious fresh breakfasts, lunches and dinners. Dishes range from fresh sushi to organic salads to wood fire pizzas and grilled fish.

You could enjoy some beach side dining of ceviche, sashimi and sushi. The Down To Earth restaurant has a Mediterranean influence with dishes made to share. Tailor made dining can also be arranged where you can choose you own menu and location to create a memorable experience.

The Soleni Dive Centre’s multi-lingual PADI instructors as well as the small dive group sizes ensure that guests of all experience levels get the best service. There are more than 30 tempting dive sites with rich sea life near Soneva Fushi. Guests can tailor their activities from snorkelling on the spectacular house reef, to excursions including dolphin cruises, sunset cruises, diving, fishing trips or any of the island based activities which seem endless.

Gemma Dobson (Staff)

This resort is one of the larger properties in the Maldives and is well established with a nice buzz having been open for over 20 years. The island habitat in the interior is quite jungle-like, lush and green and the resort has a population of wild black and white rabbits that enjoy the plants, particularly those in the vegetable garden!

The kids club here certainly deserves a mention, it is a great purpose built club with swimming pool, water slide, art room, cooking room, lego room, music room and dressing up wardrobe plus much, much more! They do also hold events for teens in the evening such as pool parties.

All of the accommodation here is set on the beach (they have nothing on the water). The size of accommodation varies greatly from the lead-in priced Crusoe Villas to the larger 2 - 6 bedroom villas that can accommodate a large group or perhaps a multigenerational family. I recommend opting to stay on the sunrise side of the island as the sunset side overlooks a neighbouring island and most guests like to look out to the blue infinity.

The bonus of it having a neighbouring island so close is that shops and medical assistance should it be needed are close at hand and if for any reason your flight arrives late and you miss the last seaplane (usually around 5pm) you can still get to Soneva Fushi the same day as there are domestic flights arriving until 11pm in the evening.

A fairly recent exciting addition to the Soneva portfolio is their amazing yacht that can comfortably sleep 4 people (there are extra beds available in one of the cabins for kids). Soneva in Aqua has a crew of 5 and we can work with them to create a bespoke voyage for you, whether that be a day sail or a stay onboard, we can work out something that will suit you perfectly!

Hannah Fullagar (Staff)

Soneva Fushi is a great location for anyone wanting to escape day to day life and really immerse themselves in the island lifestyle. Whether you want to go snorkelling on the house reef, stargaze from their observatory or take a leisurely cycle around the island, there is something for everyone. Of course for those who would rather take it easy, you can always stay and soak up the sun by your private pool. I loved the barefoot aspect of Soneva Fushi, and would definitely recommend a trip to their outdoor cinema too. Last but not least, the chocolate room is a great little extra - free chocolates all day every day - definitely appealed to my sweet tooth!

Anna Chaplin (Staff)

Soneva Fushi is such a magical place. There is so much to see and explore making it a great destination for families and couples. This is barefoot luxury at its finest.

Clare Monro (Staff)

Soneva Fushi is the epitome of barefoot luxury. The experience starts from the moment you step onto the speedboat and have your shoes taken away from you - you are told that 'no news, no shoes' is the order of the day!

Alice Moseley (Staff)

I love this resort for its true desert island back to nature feel. Rustic or barefoot luxury, however you like to phrase it, is epitomised here in the form of beautiful villas, which really blend with the environment. There are no hard corners of over polished surfaces, but bare wood and thatched roofs. That is not to say however, that you are in any way going to compromise on service or facilities here. The staff are second to none, the food exquisite and the likes of the outdoor cinema showing classic black and white movies and the garden restaurant really give this island the X Factor.

Enjoy amazing snorkelling from the Bar(A) Bara, exploring the island by bike and relaxing in your oversized villa.
