Morning fog is common this close to the ocean.
Hotel Alaia is an exciting take on a chic boutique property. This stylish surf lodge come funky beach hotel is nestled amongst sand dunes just across from Punta de Lobos beach, famous for its surf and wildly beautiful coastline.
There are just 12 identical rooms that echo the hotels modern yet rustic feel; featuring heavy polished concrete floors, walls adorned with wooden panels and floor to ceiling windows that perfectly frame the gorgeous Pacific Ocean views. The individual private terraces make for an ideal spot to chillout with an artisanal cold beer and watch the sun melt into the background.
Whilst some guests spend their days paddling out in the waves which makes this area a popular surf spot (lessons can be arranged), there are other distractions such as yoga classes, wood-fired hot tubs and a buzzing restaurant that proudly serves the best produce from within a 100 kilometre radius of the hotel. The equally cool adjoining bar is where guests congregate to relax in the evenings, with an enviable selection of wines, craft beers and cocktails, which of course include a delicious take on Chile’s famous pisco sour.
The coastline and rolling dunes beg to be explored by foot and there are some lovely long walks and birdwatching opportunities nearby. The friendly reception staff will also point you in the direction of local artisans and other eateries where one can grab some lunch or sample some more refreshing wine.
There’s a fabulous sundeck, with plenty of hammocks and daybeds and an attractive slate-tiled swimming pool, which looks out towards the ocean.
The owners place a great emphasis on engaging with the local community through tourism and environmental sustainability is at the heart of their ethos.
Hotel Alaia is perched amongst the dunes overlooking Chile’s most iconic surf spot, Punta de Lobos, a five-minute drive from coastal city Pichilemu.
It takes around three hours to drive from the international airport in Santiago to the hotel.
