To start planning your vacation to Matamanene

Matamanene offers a superb and authentic safari experience in the remote Liuwa Plains national park in the western corner of Zambia. The safaris will be operated by Norman Carr Safaris, whose founder Norman Carr introduced walking safaris to Africa and who operate stunning camps in the South Luangwa. Renowned for their world class guiding, they are offering four and five night set departure trips for just eight intrepid travelers to explore this wild and beautiful park from May - July and October - December each year.

Liuwa Plains are vast and made up of open savannahs and swamps, with big skies and some superb wildlife. In November the annual migration of blue wildebeest arrive from Angola, flooding the plains and providing a veritable buffet for the park's predators. This is Africa's (and the world's) second largest migration of wildebeest, and a spectacular time to visit. As well as these herds, resident wildlife includes herds of zebra, lechwe and tsessabe, good populations of hyena, cheetah, wild dog and lion as well as more than 330 bird species. Your safari will largely focus on game-drives, as well as walks and time tracking and learning about the predators with the Zambian Carnivore Programme which works closely with Matamanene.

There are four simple but comfortable tents set in a small grove of trees. These are set on platforms and have en-suite bathrooms with hot and cold running water. There is a spacious central area, the chitenje, with sofas and armchairs, a bar and dining area as well as a small library.

Liuwa Plains, Western Zambia

Matamanene is located in the remote Liuwa Plains national park in the far west of Zambia.

When to go

Matamanene is open as part of set departure trips for four or five night safaris, in May, June, July, October, November and early December. Please speak to your Scott Dunn travel consultant for information on specific dates.

May, June and July are the greener months after the rainy season which runs from late December until April. It's a beautiful and unspoiled time of year to visit, with lush green plains, the wildlife is fat and healthy from the abundance of grazing and prey, and there are often carpets of flowers and butterflies. October, November and December are drier months, offering great game-viewing as the grasslands are trampled and grazed down and November sees the exciting migration of blue wildebeest who are on the move from Angola - the second largest wildebeest migration in the world (after the Serengeti/Masai Mara herds).
