The Camp is closed November to March.
Zambia has a moderate to sub-tropical climate with three distinct seasons: from November to March is the Emerald, or the rainy season, April to July is Zambia's winter, when the weather is cool and dry, and August to October is summer, when the weather is hot and dry. In terms of game-viewing, the drier months, meaning a higher concentration of game at the permanent water sources, are a superb time to visit. Alternatively come for some superb bird-watching at the end of the rains.
To start planning your holiday to Tena Tena Camp
Tena Tena is a remote seasonal camp lying within the quiet Nsefu sector of the South Luangwa National Park in Zambia. Tena Tena's six comfortable and stylish tents ensure a unique wilderness safari experience.
Tena Tena is owned and run by Robin Pope Safaris who were among the first to operate safaris in this area. The camp is small and exclusive, set in the shade of a mahogany grove. The six large tents are beautifully furnished and all look on to the waterhole which provides endless game viewing. The decor of the camp is decidedly Middle Eastern, with Persian rugs, hand-dyed Indian cotton bedspreads and Bedouin-style cushions. Open bathrooms are made of woven bamboo and joined to the tents by a large grass archway. One side of the tent rolls up completely, allowing guests to relax in the privacy of their own veranda, positioned to incorporate stunning views of either the river or the waterhole. The thatched dining room and bar are the perfect place to watch the elephants, hippos and antelopes on the banks of the mighty Luangwa River.
This remote area of the park offers some of the very best wildlife viewing with daily guided game walks and drives. The drives include morning, afternoon and night drives. An all day drive, with a picnic lunch, is always available. The vehicles are specially adapted and very comfortable, Toyota landcruisers, with two tier seats. This means all guests have a "window" seat (ie 2 on a row). There is no top on the vehicle enabling 360 degree vision. The walks are led by very knowledgeable guides, and escorted by armed National Park scouts. The standard of the guiding is extremely high as all the guides in the Luangwa have to pass a thorough exam before being allowed to escort guests in to the park. Tena Tena has a well-earned reputation for providing a very superior safari experience.
Accommodation for 12 guests is in six large tents each with a veranda, dressing room and large open bathroom.
There are 6 large tents, all the tents have a private veranda and a dressing room with open air bathroom.
Children under the age of 12 years are not accepted at Tena Tena, as this is the minimum age for walking safaris. Children aged 12 to 16 years are able to walk if they are accompanied by a parent or guardian. As the camp is in a wildlife-dense area, children are asked to be with an adult at all times.
The camp is of an intimate nature, both the bar and the dinning area are open structures with lovely views over the river and waterhole. There is a good 'library' of books on offer for guests to read to enhance their knowledge of the bush.
Activities are entirely chosen by the guests and tailored to their requirements. Guests have the option of a walk or a game drive. The drives include morning, afternoon and night drives. An all day drive, with a picnic lunch, is also available. The walks are led by very knowledgeable guides, and escorted by armed National Park scouts. The standard of the guiding is outstanding. Guests can also visit the local village of Kwaza and interact with the villagers and learn about their way of life.

I felt right at home and with Tena Tenas relaxed yet personal service. A stay here allows you to be completely off the grid and immersed in the bush, enjoying stunning game viewing right from your authentic tent or even the open air bathroom! I loved sharing stories around the dinner table with other guests, guides and manager.

This is my first visit to Tena Tena since the camp was relocated from a short distance along the river bank. The camp is now located in a lovely spot between the Luangwa River and an ebony grove, a favourite overnight roosting spot for a troop of baboon. I love the new tents, much bigger and more light and airy then the old tents and all spaced out over looking the river. The tents have lovely open air bathrooms off to one side under the shade of a tree so you can shower under the stars or brush your teeth looking out to the river and the pod of hippos.
We did a lovely walk through the ebony grove during our stay and heard the baboons going wild with an alarm call which sounded as though there was a leopard fairly close by but sadly we didn't manage to spot this elusive cat. Then we had the most incredible night drive back to camp, in 13 years of going on safari regularly I have never seen a porcupine and on one night drive we have 2 fantastic sightings in the space of 10 minutes - a night drive I will never for get.

I love Tena Tena. This tented camp is a wonderful quite part of the Nsefu sector of the South Luangwa National Park. From here we when on some great drives, we were very lucky and I saw my first leopard here and also when we arrived there was a pride of lion wandering through the camp in the middle of the day, which was very exciting so we had to be driven to our tents.
Game Drives in the South Luangwa
Game drives are the most common way of exploring the African bush. A vehicle allows you to cover distance quickly and comfortably and offers visitors the best opportunity of getting very close to wildlife in a safe and controlled way.
Green Season Game Drives
The Green Season, Rainy Season, Emerald Season, Secret Season - what ever you decide to call it, this is a beautiful time of year to be on safari. Activities are rarely disrupted by weather and the bush is full of life.
If you get the opportunity to head out after sunset you should take it. The bush transforms under the cover of darkness as the nocturnal wildlife gets going. Using a spotlight your guide will scan the bush for eye-shine picking out some great action.
