When to go

The whole country, except the higher mountains, has a tropical climate and most of Tanzania has a very sunny climate with many places averaging from seven to ten hours of sunshine a day, with a bit less during the rainy season.

The December to March period is considered to be the hottest period, then April and May can be rainy, followed by a cooler period from July to October and a short rainy period in November. However, be aware that in recent years the climate has not necessarily followed traditional patterns.

Seasonal highlights

  • Jan to March is the best time to see the wildebeest migration, with February being the peak of calving season.
  • December to February is peak season in Zanzibar, as the weather is hot and sunny and the water is at its clearest.
  • If you’re planning on conquering Mount Kilimanjaro, the climate is a bit cooler around July to August and there is less risk of rain.
