Hokkaido is a year-round destination for travellers as its distinct seasons benefit the activities you can do here. The hotter summer months of July and August are perfect for witnessing colourful meadows full of flowers. Winter peaks in January with colder temperatures than the rest of the country, but it is then that the snowy slopes are at their best for skiing. The months of April, May and June are spring-like with pleasant temperatures and long sunny days, which is great for hiking. Autumn arrives early on Hokkaido and by mid-September the famous autumn colours are once again changing the landscape.

  1. Fly into Memanbetsu

  2. Days 1-2: Lake Abashiri, Hokkaido, Japan

    Transfer to Abashiri upon arrival and embark on an interesting Icebreaker cruise (seasonal). Witness the shocking brilliance of the white, mysterious mass of ice floating on the surface of the sea. If you are lucky, get the chance to see a variety of wild animals including marine animals and rare birds!

    Accommodation: Lake Abashiri Tsuruga Resort (1 night)

  3. Days 2-3: Shiretoko, Hokkaido, Japan

    Put on your wetsuits today and explore the Shiretoko Peninsula, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Walk along the drift ice or swim amongst the white blocks, a unique experience that can only be readily seen in Eastern Hokkaido by the Okhotsk sea. Not to worry, the wet suits will keep you warm!

    Accommodation: Shiretoko Grand Kitakobushi (1 night)

  4. Days 3-5: Lake Akan, Hokkaido, Japan

    Stay in Akan for two nights. Before heading to Lake Akan, go onboard the Shiretoko Nature Cruise in search for the various wildlife including Steller’s sea eagle, white-tailed sea eagle and seals. Enjoy a tour of Lake Akan and its surrounds. Visit Mt Iou, an active volcano and drive to the scenic Lake Mashu, one of the most transparent lakes in the world and if the timing is right, a thick fog covers the lake and gives it a mysterious and ethereal atmosphere. Discover the indigenous people of Hokkaido – the Ainu and visit the museum and cultural village.

    Accommodation: Tsuruga Besso Hinanoza (2 nights)

  5. Days 5-6: Kushiro, Hokkaido, Japan

    Spend the last night in Kushiro, a coastal city and the fourth largest of Hokkaido and known for its fresh and tasty seafood. Explore the local market and visit the renowned Kushiro Marsh which is teeming with a plethora of rare animals and plants. Before heading to the city, make a stop in Akan International Crane Center to observe and beautiful and exquisite Japanese red necked cranes.

    Accommodation: La Vista Kushirogawa (1 night)
