Best time to Visit

Good time to visit

Average time to visit

The best and most popular times to visit Japan are the climatically stable seasons of spring (March to May) and autumn (late September to November). The highlight of spring is the cherry-blossom season, which usually arrives in early April. Autumn is an equally good time to travel, with pleasant temperatures and soothing autumn colours, which usually peak between late October and mid-November. Of course, you can visit Japan anytime although the summer, from June to August, can be very hot and humid, and winter can be a little chilly for some people’s taste.

Itinerary

Discover the authentic heart of Honshu with its many ancient traditions, starting from the coastal city of Niigata famed for producing Japan's best sake and old streets dating back to the Edo times. Continue to Shima Onsen with its ancient onsen known for tremendous health benefits, before arriving at Nikko which has formed the spiritual centre of Shinto and Buddhist mountain worships, with spectacular sceneries and quaint shrines waiting for you to unravel.

  1. Days 1-3: Niigata

Your journey begins in the largest city on the western coast of Honshu. Facing the Sea of Japan and blessed with fertile soil, Niigata is a charming city known for its excellent rice and sake production.

Our guide will bring you on a tour of the Old Town along the Furumachi district with its quaint temples and houses which were once a bustling geisha quarter during the Edo era. Afterwards, we embark on a sake tour, starting from the Imayotsukasa Brewery and then sake tasting and shopping at Kikizake Bansho.

For wine enthusiasts, we can arrange optional half-day supplement to visit five coastal wineries. If you have an extra day, we also recommend a day trip to Sado Island to partake in Taiko drum lesson and board the traditional tub boat as made famous in the landmark animation Spirited Away.

    Accommodation: Okura Niigata (2 nights)

  2. Days 3-4: Shima

Bidding farewell to Niigata, we continue to the onsen town of Shima. Since ancient times, the hot springs of Shima is known to have medicinal properties capable of curing diseases.

During your one night stay in the onsen town, you will also have the opportunity to explore the Suwakyo Gorge and take a ropeway up to the distinctively symmetrical Mount Haruna, set against the picturesque Lake Haruna.

    Accommodation: Shima Tamura (1 night)

  3. Days 4-6: Nikko

Finally, your journey continues to Nikko. If you happen to visit around April-May, we can also arrange optional stop at Ashikaga Flower Park, known for its postcard-perfect wisteria bloom.

Renowned for its rich nature and cultural traditions, Nikko has long been the centre of Shinto and Buddhist mountain worship. We will visit some of these attractions, including the magnificent Kegon Falls and the quaint Chuzenji Temple.

Enjoy a boat ride along the Kinugawa Valley, the amazing ravine with its emerald-coloured streams. Drive through Cedar Avenue, a street in Nikko lined with thousands of cedar trees. Tucked in the beautiful forest lies Nikko Toshogu Shrine, a lavishly decorated shrine, the gorgeous gorge of Kanmangafuchi Abyss with its mysterious rows of Jizo statues, as well as the Ryuzu Falls which resembles Dragon's Head.

We conclude with Senjoga-hara Marshland, which covers the plateau between Lake Chuzenji and Yumoto Onsen. At 1,400m above sea level, the area offers great hiking opportunities with stunning views, particularly during the autumn season.

Accommodation: Hoshino KAI Nikko (2 nights)
