The Pera Palace Hotel has been an Istanbul institution since the days when the Orient Express train first extended into Turkey. At the time it was decided that Istanbul did not have a hotel of a high enough standard for its travelers, and the legend was born! Famous guests since the hotel's opening in 1895 include Agatha Christie, Ernest Hemingway and even Ataturk himself, the founder of modern Turkey, whose room has now been taken off sale and preserved as a museum which you can visit during your stay.
The hotel has been lovingly renovated by its new owners and is now part of the prestigious Jumeirah hotel chain.
A stay at Pera Palace is a unique experience as you can really feel part of the history of this grand old building. Highlights include the sumptuous marble-clad entrance hall, the stunning and beautifully reserved lounge (a popular spot for afternoon tea) and the historic elevator - the Pera Palace was the first building in Istanbul apart from the Ottoman royal palaces to benefit from electricity and was the first to install a lift, which is still operational to this day.
Pera Palace Jumeirah has 115 rooms and suites, many of them named after famous residents of the hotel. The top categories boast views over the Golden Horn or over the city's Pera district. All are decorated in a traditional, classical style, but with all the modern amenities you would expect from one of the city's best 5 star hotels.
As you would expect, Pera Palace has a range of restaurants and bars which rank among the city's best known places to see and be seen. These include 'Agatha's', the main restaurant named after Agatha Christie, the Orient Terrace, outdoors with its views over Pera and the Golden Horn, and the stunning Kubbeli Saloon Tea Lounge, with its domed ceiling and elegant parquet floors.
Pera Palace Hotel Jumeirah offers a well appointed, if compact, spa and fitness facility under the hotel. As you would expect in Turkey, there are male and female hammams, as well as an indoor pool and health club.

When to go
The best times to visit Istanbul are in spring (April to May) and autumn (September to October), when skies are clear and temperatures are moderate. During July and August it is hot and steamy; a lot of Istanbullus head for the west and south coasts over these months and some businesses close. Biting winter winds and snow are common in winter.
Be aware that during the five-day Kurban Bayrami banks shut and ATMs can run out of money. During Ramadan business hours can be erratic. Hotel rooms skyrocket in price and are often overbooked during the Formula 1 Grand Prix in June.
