Insider's View

The Yeatman is named after the Yeatman family, once owners of the Taylor's port company. RJ Yeatman was the co-author of the celebrated tongue-in-cheek guide to 'all the history you can remember', '1066 and All That', and you'll find a complimentary copy in your room on arrival!

Definitely book in for a tour of Porto's largest wine cellar - underneath the hotel!

Catch the cable car up from the river front close to the hotel to the top of the main bridge in Porto for the most scenic route across to the old city.

Don't discount the restaurants and bars on the Yeatman's side of the river for simple Portuguese food.

Book a table well in advance for the hotel's Michelin starred restaurant to avoid disappointment.

Explore the various floors of the hotels to discover the different themes - one is centred around the port production process and has interesting diagrams and artwork on display along the corridors.

Description

One of the best hotels in Portugal, the Yeatman offers fabulous views of Porto from every room, Michelin starred dining, and a state of the art 'Vinotherapie' spa. All the rooms are very spacious and extremely comfortable.

Located in the heart of Porto, one of Europe's most important wine capitals and European Capital of Culture in 2001, The Yeatman is a haven for wine lovers and those wishing to spend a few days exploring this fascinating and vibrant city.

The Yeatman is situated on the south side of the river Douro, surrounded by the cellars of the most famous port wine producers of the city. Its hillside location means that all its rooms, the gardens, and the restaurant share a charming view of the historic centre of the city.

The outdoor infinity pool is truly unique - in the shape of a wine bottle, it offers views of the city not only from the surface, but also from underwater portholes. Large and well tended gardens surround the property, and the hotel is also home to central Porto's only perfectly manicured croquet lawn!

The cellars of The Yeatman house one of the most comprehensive collections of Portuguese wines in the country. The hotel has established partnerships with many of Portugal's finest producers who actively participate in a programme of tasting's, seminars and wine dinners. These partner wineries also sponsor individual rooms and suites, providing pictures and objects from their vineyards in different parts of the country in each guest room.

The wine theme also extends to the 'Vinothérapie' Spa with its exclusive skincare products and therapies using extracts from the vine.

Accommodation

All rooms at The Yeatman are exceptionally spacious and have large enclosed private terraces with stunning views of the city. The style of décor is understated and elegant. Each individually decorated room is discretely themed with intriguing artefacts and pictures contributed by a different Portuguese wine producer. The large and airy bathrooms are fitted to the highest standard and offer amenities including skincare products from the exclusive Caudalie skincare range used in the hotel's spa.

For a really special stay why not try one of the hotel's prestigious 'Master Suites'. The Taylor's Suite features a double bed housed in a huge oak barrel, and the show-stopping 'Bacchus Suite' a copper Jacuzzi, rotating bed, conservatory and huge outdoor terrace.

Childcare

Families are welcome at The Yeatman. Private walled gardens surround the property, providing a quiet and secure environment seldom found in a city hotel. Kids can hunt in the gardens for the olive tree that’s over 1350 years old, discover where corks come from and how they are made, and sign their names on the biggest cork in the world. Children are welcome to use both pools and ride in the hot air balloon lift. The usual services and amenities designed for families and younger guests are available, such as interconnecting rooms, extra beds, cots and children's menus. Round-the-clock babysitting can be arranged with advance notice.

There is a Kids Club which is open between 10:00 and 18:00. Children aged from 3 to 16 are welcome. For the younger guests there is a child minding service. The Yeatman will provide meals for children while they are playing in the Kids Club on request.

Facilities

A member of the Relais and Chateaux collection, the hotel is home to one of the finest restaurants in the city, which was awarded a Michelin star in 2011. Aiming to deliver the city's most inspiring dining experience, The Yeatman's restaurant in Oporto offers imaginative cuisine in which the traditional flavours of Portugal are interpreted and presented with contemporary flair. It showcases Portugal's huge range of fish and other fresh produce as well as its diversity of regional specialties.

Complementing The Yeatman's own wine activities, visits can be arranged to leading vineyards and estates in the Douro Valley, Minho, Dão and Bairrada wine regions, all easily accessible by road.

Activities

From the Yeatman it is a short walk down to the banks of the Douro and across into the city centre. You may prefer to take a (quick and inexpensive) taxi back to avoid the uphill walk however. Activities in the city include visits to the historic centre of the city and to the port cellars which surround the hotel, as well as boat trips on the Douro River. Excursions into the wine producing areas of the Douro Valley can also be organised.

The Yeatman was an absolutely luxurious experience from the moment I arrived until the moment I left. Located just outside of the city centre, it offers peace and quiet, but is close enough to easily explore the city. As you make your way deeper into the hotel you discover that each of the floors are themed around either wine or Porto and the city's history. The dcor in the rooms continues these themes and represents different aspects of port production, such as old wine bottles and crates. On top of this, every room is guaranteed a view, as the hotel was specifically designed with premier views in mind. One of the most celebrated aspects of the Yeatman is their Michelin-starred gastronomic restaurant, which offers two tasting menus of traditional Portuguese dishes with a contemporary twist.

Located just across the river from the historic centre of Porto, the Yeatman is a classic city hotel which benefits from the extra space and facilities which are harder to find in more centrally positioned properties. The hotel's spacious rooms have been decorated in a simple, but elegant style, and each is themed according to a different type of Portuguese wine, to reflect the importance of port and wine production in the region. My stay here was extremely comfortable, and their service was hard to fault. I particularly enjoyed being able to walk back from an afternoon of sightseeing in Porto knowing that a panoramic pool and peaceful spa were awaiting me.

The Yeatman is the classically luxurious, faultless and the best place to stay in Porto. The views over the Gothic city of Porto are breathtaking and there are countless areas to appreciate it from; the pool, at breakfast and on your private terrace against the backdrop of the river it is simply stunning. The service and decor is all what you would come to expect from a hotel of this calibre.

The Yeatman offers a unique concept: the 'wine hotel' themed around the viticultural heritage of Portugal. This idea extends beyond the decor and food and beverage to the 'Vinotherapie' spa. The hotel even includes a museum on the history of cork manufacture in Portugal, and the world's largest cork can be seen there.
