Description

A spectacular high-altitude trek through the Vilcanota’s Cordillera to Peru’s most sacred mountain, Mount Ausangate, staying at four unique lodges, or ‘tambos’, amongst the breath-taking scenery of the high Andes.

The lodge-to-lodge trek along the ‘Camino del Apu Ausangate’ takes you through some of the most remote and remarkable scenery in Peru, as you follow the ancient mountain trails once trodden by llama merchants and pilgrims to one of Peru’s highest mountains, Ausangate. This spectacular trek will take you through mountain valleys filled with grazing alpacas, past azure blue lakes and snowcapped peaks, until you set eyes on Apu Ausangate, sacred to the Incas. Today, this soaring peak is known amongst the local Chillca people as the ‘The Omnipotent Shepherd’, watching over their flocks as they graze on the mountain pastures. An adventurous trek, you will traverse varied and at times challenging terrain that ranges from vibrant red rocks and lush wetlands to rugged mountain passes and glacial lagoons. Along with your expert guides, your trek is accompanied by a caravan of llamas and horses who will carry all the gear, allowing you to soak up the incredible scenery of the high Andes.

At the end of a long day of trekking, your lodge (or ‘tambo’) will be a welcome sight, lit by candles and lanterns with the warmest of Andean welcomes from your local Chillca hosts. Constructed from local stone and eucalyptus logs from the Cusco valley, each of the eco-lodges is an inviting refuge from the wilds of the mountains, complete with comfortable beds, hot showers and delicious home cooked food.   Their extraordinary locations amongst the Vilcanota ranges ensures you wake up to mesmerising views, before you set off on your next day’s trek. By night, your hosts will regale you with tales of their ancestors and share traditional music of the Andes.

The Camino del Apu Ausangate reaches altitudes of over 5,000 meters and covers 7 -8 hours trekking each day, so we would recommend a good level of fitness for anyone undertaking this remarkable trek. 3 to 4 days of acclimatisation in Cuzco is also strongly recommended, enabling you fully enjoy the spectacular vistas and unique flora and fauna of the high Andes.

Accommodation

Ausangate Andean Lodges comprise four unique mountain lodges in spectacular locations along the trekking route. Each of the four ‘tambos’ (Incan for ‘resting place’) offering comfortable beds with thermal feather duvets and stunning views of the Vilcanota mountain range. Bathrooms with flushing toilets and running cold and hot water tapped from nearby springs make these mountain sanctuaries a welcome retreat after a long day of trekking.

Childcare

The trek to Ausangate Mountain is challenging and takes you to high altitudes in places, notably the Palomani Pass, at 5,150 meters above sea level, so we do not recommend this trek for young children.

Facilities

There is no electricity at the lodges. They are heated by firewood and lit by candles and lanterns, creating a magical atmosphere after dark, allowing you to enjoy the blanket of stars and constellations visible in the Andean sky.  Local chefs prepare fresh and nutritious dishes to nourish hungry trekkers, before you retire to the cosy heated living space to listen to traditional music or hear stories of the ancient Incas.

Activities

The trek to Apu Ausangate requires between 7 and 8 hours of trekking each day, through constantly changing altitude. We therefore suggest that a good level of fitness is required to undertake this trek. 3 to 4 days spent acclimatising to the altitude in Cuzco or the surrounding areas should combat any altitude sickness.
