Summer or winter, rain or shine, there's always great stuff going on in New York, so when you're planning a trip, there's no real "best" or "worst" time to go. Weather wise fall and spring are the best times in New York. From April to June and September to November, temperatures are mild and pleasant, and the light is beautiful. Summers can be hot and humid while winter snowfalls are not uncommon.
September to December is conference season in New York, and we would advise booking early for travel during this period.
The Surrey is a sophisticated and glamorous luxury design hotel with cool interiors and immaculate facilities, providing a perfect Manhattan base for shopping till you drop and culture-vulturing along Museum Mile.
Located on Manhattan’s Upper East Side a mere block from Central Park, and within easy walking distance of many of New York’s famous museums and most stylish stores and restaurants, The Surrey is a beautifully designed luxury boutique hotel that caters to the most discriminating travellers.
Originally built in 1926, this historic hotel used to be a bolthole for celebrities such as JFK and Bette Davis, who valued its discreet and exceptional service, and its recent makeover has preserved these traditions while subtly updating the interiors to modern sensibilities, with original modern art works dispersed throughout the hotel.
The hotel’s 190 salons and suites exude cool, calm class with interiors of cream, black, grey and sepia, along with plush carpets, lacquer finishing and wonderful tiled bathrooms. Many of the rooms have fireplaces, a welcome and warming touch if you are in New York in the winter.
Glamorous touches such as the spectacular private roof garden, with superb views across Manhattan, and the Coco Chanel-inspired Bar Pleiades, are great places to sip a cocktail, while the acclaimed Café Boulud is a superb informal fine dining restaurant where seasonal French-inspired delicacies are served.
The hotel’s ‘Spa at The Surrey’ is one of New York’s finest, and offers personalised treatments in an intimate setting - the perfect place for some pampering and relaxation after a hard day’s shopping or museum-hopping, for which the knowledgeable concierge will be delighted to help arrange assistance.
The Surrey has 190 rooms and suites with flat screen TV, iPod dock, minibar and Laura Tonatto products The Ultra Deluxe Salon comes with a fireplace and a soaking tub.
Children are welcome, with free cots and extra beds for $40. Art-loving, culture-keen older children and teenagers are particularly well catered for given the location. Babysitting can be arranged for $25 an hour (based on a four-hour minimum; there will be an extra charge for the babysitter’s transport to the hotel). The Ultra Deluxe Suites have kitchenettes with microwaves, fridges, hobs and sinks. There’s also space for cots and day beds.
Gym, superb spa, gardens and WiFi (local charge applicable); the rooftop garden, overlooking Central Park and the Upper East Side on the 17th floor, is served by a butler who’ll happily serve you drinks up here. The restaurant Café Boulud has been styled by a Parisian artist and a NY-based architect, and the decor (wood panelling, plush upholstery, neutral hues, pendant lamps with rice paper shades, coral leather chairs and white linen-dressed tables) reflects this. The menu is shaped around four concepts: tradition, the season, the vegetable garden and travel. The hotel's Bar Pleiades is inspired by Coco Chanel and the 1930s, with leather quilted walls, black and white lacquer finishes, French doors, banquette seating and plenty of nooks and crannies, and is a great place to enjoy a Manhattan or two.
