Newport, Rhode Island is the East Coast resort famed or its fabulous summer mansions, commissioned in the early 20th Century by some of Americas elite families such as the Astors and Vanderbilts. A stay at the Chanler, which is one of the original Gilded Age mansions, transports guests back to this bygone era where glamour and opulence were de rigueur.
The journey starts as you drive past the beautiful manicured lawns and spectacular houses that typify Newport and through the wrought iron gates to the grand entrance of the Chanler. Much care has been taken to retain the historic feel of the mansion with lots of wooden panelling, antiques and fine art, however this is mixed with 21st Century mod-cons to ensure a relaxing and luxurious stay.
Each of the 20 rooms has its own individual style with no expense spared on the sumptuous fabrics, wallpapers and furniture. The Chanler is more a hotel for romantics less for minimalists!
Food at the Chanler is very much present day prepared by chefs from the open kitchen of the Spiced Pear restaurant. Start the day with a relaxed breakfast in the Veranda or on the breezy Cliff Walk terrace - also a good spot for a casual lunch. The Chanler features 20 uniquely appointed rooms. Each one focuses on a particular time in the past to give it plenty of personality such as 'Renaissance' or 'English Tudor'. The rooms have fireplaces, wet bars and stone bathrooms. Some rooms have outdoor private hot tubs and saunas in addition. The Ocean Villas and Garden Villas have private entrances, are more spacious and have fabulous views.
Children are welcome to come and stay at The Chanler. However, there are no specific facilities available for them at the hotel other than a babysitting service which can be organized upon request if needed.
