Description

Sitting on the water's edge on the golden sands of Coronado beach, the Hotel del Coronado presents the quintessential southern California resort experience. With its whitewashed exterior, conical towers and balconies, The Del as it is affectionately known, is an iconic hotel seeped in history with past guests from Marilyn Monroe to Charles Lindbergh.

The Del's beach is a huge swathe of white sand with gentle water, making it a great beach for building sand castles, beginners surf lessons and enjoying sunset cocktails on the terrace. The Del is a favorite choice for couples and families looking for a combination of beach and activity - just a short distance away families can visit San Diego Zoo and Safari Park, US Midway Museum, LegoLand and the new Aquatica Water Park.

The Beach Village at The Del offers a private enclave of residential-style cottages and villas set within the iconic Hotel del Coronado. This luxury beach resort offers a unique combination of seaside ambience, elevated service and sophisticated amenities. The beach bungalow offers a true home from home with gourmet kitchens, cozy fireplaces and spectacular ocean views. Guests of the Beach Village also have access to private pools and beach and VIP access to all Hotel del Coronado's excellent facilities.

Within the main hotel, the Victorian Building offers quirky and characterful rooms, while the beachfront tower offers larger, more uniform rooms in a contemporary style. Whichever accommodation you chose, The Del's prime beachfront location makes it a firm favorite.

Accommodation

There are three distant areas to the resort; the old Victorian Building, the modern Towers and Cabana Buildings and the separate Beach Village with its cottages and villas.

Having undergone recent refurbishment of the Victorian Building, The Del's main hotel rooms are fresh and airy, while maintaining their quirky, original features. No one room is the same here and some are very small but they are great for couples who will appreciate the history of the Del. The resort has been visited by celebrities, dignitaries and presidents. The resort also offers a cotemporary beachfront tower with more contemporary, spacious rooms.

The Beach Villas at The Del feature one, two or three bedrooms, and feature comforts such as gourmet kitchens, Bose sound systems, fireplaces and fire pits. Village guests benefit from enhanced concierge service such as in-suite chefs, additional swimming pools and hot tubs, and the Windsor Cottage serving breakfast and cocktails.

Childcare

The Del offers children's and teenager programs and is also within easy reach of attractions such as San Diego Zoo, Legoland and Balboa Park.

Facilities

There are eight unique dining venues to accommodate all tastes including 1500 OCEAN, Sheerwater, Babcock & Story Bar, and ENO. Within strolling access to quaint Coronado Village, featuring shops, restaurants & pubs. The Del is just four miles from San Diego's downtown Historic Gaslamp Quarter and the old Mexican Quarter.

Activities

The resort puts on fun activities from summer time s’mores on the beach to festive season seaside ice skating. The hotels recreation department offers children's and teen programs, surfing lessons, bike rentals and more.

The Fitness Center offers personal training and an aerobics studio with a variety of classes including spin, zumba, beach yoga and Pilates. For golf enthusiasts there are eight top-ranked golf courses within a 30-minute drive.

When to go

San Diego has a year-round climate. Summer (June - September) is the peak-tourist season, this is when the weather is at its hottest and the city can be over crowded. If you are visiting in May or June watch out for the 'marine layer', a cloudy overcast, almost fog-like cloud which may affect the beach and first mile or so of the coastal strip, especially in the mornings.
