Steps from the Sunset Strip and a short ride from the world-class Rodeo Drive shops
Secluded and beautiful private bungalows surrounded by manicured and lush grounds
Head for the Santa Monica and Venice Beaches, where 5.6km of freshly groomed sand awaits
Los Angeles has a year-round climate. Summer (June - September) is the peak-tourist season, this is when the weather is hottest but beaches can be over crowded. January and February are the rainiest months. If you are visiting in May, June or July, watch out for the 'marine layer', a cloudy overcast, almost fog-like cloud which may affect the beach and first mile or so of the coastal strip, especially in the mornings.
Modelled from the blueprint of a French Castle in 1920, Chateau Marmont remains the epitome of Hollywood glamour and cool in the heart of Sunset Boulevard. From the stylish bungalows to Bar Marmont's chic banquets, this is the place to be seen in LA.
A night at the infamous Chateau Marmont, which rises high above the Sunset Strip, is part of the quintessential Hollywood experience. Upon arrival at Chateau Marmont, you feel like you've turned up in the middle of an ongoing party at a European country estate.
Despite being steeped in rock'n'roll notoriety, it still offers much tranquillity. Updated a decade ago by designer Shawn Hausman, the frescoed vaulted ceilings and estate furniture look is charmingly bohemian, with a laid-back rather than glitzy feel. The pool area, which is accessed via a locked gate and hidden from The Strip behind lush vegetation, is truly serene and offers a perfect rejuvenation spot after a night of debauchery.
The Marmont's greatest charm has always been its privacy. A hotspot for celebrities and movie directors, more people than Greta Garbo have come here to be alone - with some guests not leaving for weeks! The hotel rooms are slick and swanky, and every one of them is different in size and style. The sumptuous lobby lounge is relaxing and as the sun sets, it is the perfect location for sinking into a plush chair, savour the ambience and subtly enjoy some celeb-spotting.
Built originally as an upscale apartment residence, all 63 rooms and residences are roomy and full of natural light. 52 of the rooms have functional kitchenettes. From classic deluxe bedrooms and suites to the garden cottages, bungalows and penthouse suites, Chateau Marmont has the variety of rooms to suit all guests needs.
One bedroom and two bedroom suites have large living rooms and a private balcony or large terrace. Nine 1930s Spanish style Garden Cottages with lovely hardwood floors and queen-sized beds are grouped around a landscaped courtyard right by the pool. The two-storey poolside bungalows have 2 or 3 bedrooms and a patio with direct access to the pool. Two-bedroom Hillside bungalows are the real height of luxury, designed by mid-century architect Craig Ellwood, with private entrances and a large full enclosed private garden connecting to the pool.
Expect all the luxuries including embroidered sheets, personalised stationery and hand-woven cashmere throws.
Families with children of all ages are welcome, although its late night party reputation may rule out parents of babies, although they are wholly welcome. Cots and high chairs are available on request, as is babysitting by arrangement.
The Restaurant at the Chateau Marmont features an intimate indoor dining area as well as an idyllic garden terrace. Traditional American meals with a twist are prepared for breakfast, lunch and dinner by head chef Carolynn Spence. A late night menu is also offered. The restaurant is open seven days a week.
