The main season is in January and February, when the weather is hottest and driest. At this time, the animals in the wildlife parks tend to congregate more around the watercourses, making them easier to spot.
Northern and eastern Kenya temperatures vary from highs of up to 40°C during the day to less than 20°C at night. Rainfall in this area is sparse and, when it does occur, is often in the form of violent storms. July is usually the driest month, and November the wettest.

Sosian is a 24,000 acre private ranch in the heart of Laikipia, a vast expanse of wilderness in the heart of Kenya’s highlands and home to a huge diversity of mammals and birds. The ranch house was built in the 1940s by Italian artisans, and has recently been restored. The atmosphere in this classic homestead is incredibly friendly with a homely feel. The seven en-suite cottages at Sosian accommodate up to 14 guests and delicious home-cooking is enhanced by fresh ingredients from the organic vegetable garden.
With its homely atmosphere Sosian welcomes families and children of all ages. Some favourite activities include jumping off the waterfall, riding lessons and short treks on the excellently schooled horses and ponies, camel rides, fishing, archery, picnics, collecting eggs from the chicken house, feeding the pet eland, tubing down the river and simply having the space to run around and be children. For riding enthusiasts it is possible to arrange longer rides exploring the wonderful surroundings of ranch as well as multi-day riding safaris.
As well as all the exciting safari activities on offer, the lodge has a large swimming pool and tennis court together with miles of wilderness to explore with top guides, who bring the wildlife and African bush to life.
Sosian Lodge has seven homely en-suite cottages in the gardens of the homestead. Each room sleeps up to two people in either a double bed or twin beds. They are all wonderfully decorated and very comfortable to make your stay as enjoyable as possible.

This really is a fab place for those into horses. The riding set up here is very impressive with horses on offer for all abilities. There is even a cross country course in front of the lodge! A warm, welcoming feel. The rooms are simple but very comfortable overlooking a lawn area where donkeys roam around. Children have plenty of space to run and play, or adults can set up a game of croquet! Riding, game drives, walks and camels are on offer here. There is also a waterfall to visit and jump off! It would be a fab place for a family or couple alike.

We loved Sosian Ranch when we visited - lovely rooms set in beautiful gardens, and a fabulous main house. We enjoyed a delicious lunch around the large swimming pool on arrival and then headed straight out for some of the best gameviewing we have had - wild dog, very close, and now denning in the area. We were able to get out of the vehicle and approach them so we were on their level, an amazing experience! We watched as they hunted impala, and were successful, the kill taking place a few hundred yards into the bush. In the evening we enjoyed a delicious communal dinner, the atmosphere being more like a house party, complete with a snooker table - and there's even a piano in the living room! Also on offer here is great horse riding in Laikipia's picturesque surroundings. It's a great place to explore for safari enthusiasts and also for those who like to ride.

I loved my stay at Sosian, it has a real house party feel. We arrived just before lunch which was a huge selection of salads, lasagne and everyone sat together and chatted about what activities they had been up to that morning. Steve and Annabelle, the managers, where fantastic at suggesting possible activities for the afternoon – a what a huge choice there was on offer. From fabulous riding, to a refreshing swim in a river (there is a great swimming pool as well), to a game of tennis, we were spoilt for choice! We ended up tracking a pride of lion with radio collars which was very exciting as the bush was so thick we would have never found them otherwise and they were moving so quickly. We then had dinner that was cooked over the camp fire and we sat around in the flickering fire light listening to the lion roaring in the distance. I would highly recommend Sosian for people who like to be busy and out enjoying and getting stuck into all the activities that Sosian has to offer.
