There are in fact two gardens at Heywood: the earlier eighteenth-century landscaped gardens were designed by Fredrick Trench and include Gothic follies, an obelisk, a bath house, lakes and woodland, all inspired by Trench’s travels on the Grand Tour.

The centrepiece of Heywood, however, is the magnificent interlocked formal garden designed in 1912 by Sir Edwin Lutyens and Gertrude Jekyll, widely regarded as being the best example of Lutyens’ work in Ireland. Wander along the alley of pleached limes to the Upper Terrace, where you can admire the chain of three lakes and ancient oak woodland that form part of the older romantic landscape.
