Ladakh is open for tourists only during the summer months of May to September as it is the only season when the passes open.

The weather of Ladakh remains cold and chilly for most part of the year. Winter usually lasts from October to May and its usually very cold. Frost bites are a common occurrence, making it a very inhospitable climate for visiting. During these months the whole area is covered with snow. Monsoon season experiences rainfall but due to the land slides, the area is closed. The temperature is cool and can go up to 33°C.

The Shakti Ladakh Village Houses maximise the authentic experience of witnessing rural Himalayan life, yet have been uniquely renovated to produce comfortable havens, blending old world Himalayan charm with a dash of sophistication.

There are six Village Houses located in the villages of Stok, Shey, Nimmu, Likir and Igu which have all been lovingly renovated using traditional Ladakhi craftsmanship, whilst understanding the desires and needs of the discerning traveller. They are always taken exclusively, and so you will be the only occupants at any one time. The staff are simply adorable and will run around on your behalf making sure your expectations are exceeded and that your experience is unforgettable.

The houses are built in traditional Ladakhi fashion using sun baked mud bricks and wooden beams made of poplar and willow. This has then been plastered with traditional white clay making the houses feel light and airy. Nearly all the rooms have western en-suite bathrooms and the bedrooms have been furnished to a very high standard offering amazing beds, a chest of drawers and a ‘chettai’ mat floor. All the houses have cosy living rooms with Ladakhi cushions, coffee tables and a small library. The houses come into their own with delightful roof and sun terraces where you can sit back on wicker furniture with a good book overlooking a part of India that is exclusively yours.

Each village offers something unique in terms of their location and proximity to cultural sites. In six nights and more it is possible to combine a stay at a lower altitude house, to better acclimatise and with great accessibility for whitewater rafting, Basco Fort, Likir and Alchi Monasteries. Followed by a more remote village at higher altitudes for epic scenery, walks, biking and birdlife, and finally a stop at the villages with easier accessibility to Leh airport and Stok and Shey Palaces and Thiksey and Hemis monasteries.

The Ladakh Village Houses are a fantastic way to explore the remote and harsh desert mountain environment in a comfortable and fascinating way. Each village house is simple and luxurious, with three bedrooms with en-suite shower rooms on the summer house level (top) converted in a traditional village house. The beds have sprung mattresses with thick duvets, and hot water bottles as well as a lit wood burner in your bedroom ensures you are cosy in the cooler evenings.

The roof terraces are wonderful, great to lounge and observe village life unfold below. It is gloriously relaxing, listening to bird song and the rustle of willow and poplar trees in the wind, while the lovely staff make sure you are well hydrated as you acclimatise with lots of tea, and home made cake and biscuit treats.

The activities can be tailored specifically to your interest, whether it be cooking classes, painting, birdwatching, trekking, photography or cultural so visiting monasteries.

The Ladakh Village Houses were the third project which was undertaken by Shakti Himalaya, and it shows in the way they have developed this exclusive offering. So many people just head to a 3* hotel in Leh, and in many ways miss out on what Ladakh has to offer. You feel so special being the tourist in the village you are staying in, and this means you can actually have a chance to talk to the people who live there, which so many people don't have the opportunity to do. The activities on offer are all quite amazing, and very diverse. In many ways, this is the ultimate summer holiday.
