Location
Ladakh is situated in the far north of the sub-continent, over 3,500m up on the high plateau. With a high altitude desert dominated by rugged snow capped mountains and deep turquoise lakes it is often referred to as ‘little Tibet’.
The Shakti Ladakh Village Houses maximize the authentic experience of witnessing rural Himalayan life, yet have been uniquely renovated to produce comfortable havens, blending old world Himalayan charm with a dash of sophistication.
Highlights
Offering a range of village houses in remote locations away from Leh where most tourists base themselves
Village Houses are always taken privately offering exclusive experiences
A support team of drivers, guides and cooks are with you while you move through Ladakh
Out of all the Shakti offerings, Ladakh is easily accessible by a flight from Delhi, then only a short transfer by road
There are six Village Houses located in the villages of Stok, Shey, Nimmu, Likir and Igu which have all been lovingly renovated using traditional Ladakhi craftsmanship, while understanding the desires and needs of the discerning traveler. They are always taken exclusively, and so you will be the only occupants at any one time. The staff are simply adorable and will run around on your behalf making sure your expectations are exceeded and that your experience is unforgettable.
The houses are built in traditional Ladakhi fashion using sun baked mud bricks and wooden beams made of poplar and willow. This has then been plastered with traditional white clay making the houses feel light and airy. Nearly all the rooms have western en-suite bathrooms and the bedrooms have been furnished to a very high standard offering amazing beds, a chest of drawers and a ‘chettai’ mat floor. All the houses have cozy living rooms with Ladakhi cushions, coffee tables and a small library. The houses come into their own with delightful roof and sun terraces where you can sit back on wicker furniture with a good book overlooking a part of India that is exclusively yours.
Each village offers something unique in terms of their location and proximity to cultural sites. In six nights and more it is possible to combine a stay at a lower altitude house, to better acclimatise and with great accessibility for whitewater rafting, Basco Fort, Likir and Alchi Monasteries. Followed by a more remote village at higher altitudes for epic scenery, walks, biking and birdlife, and finally a stop at the villages with easier accessibility to Leh airport and Stok and Shey Palaces and Thiksey and Hemis monasteries.
