Our experts recommend visiting Japan during spring and autumn, more specifically early March to late May, and early October to early December.
Japan’s cherry blossom season is a beautiful spectacle of pink blooms that moves across the country over a couple of months. It is also one of Japan’s busiest travel periods, as visitors flock to popular viewing spots. Timing for peak bloom ranges from:
- January to February: Early blooms in southernmost prefectures like Okinawa
- March to April: Blooms in Honshu, popular viewing in Osaka, Kyoto, Tokyo
- Late April to early May: Tail end of peak bloom, may be able to see blooms in cities like Hakodate and Sapporo on northernmost island Hokkaido
Fall foliage, known as koyo, sees Japan’s city streets and forests turn shades of red, orange and gold. Leaves change color gradually from north to south and, while just as striking as spring blooms, popular sites tend to be less crowded. You can experience this seasonal change by visiting during:
- Late September to October: Early color appears in Hokkaido, including Sapporo, and across the Japanese Alps
- October to November: Central regions reach their peak, with strong displays in cities such as Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka
- Late November to early December: The season moves south to Kyushu, including Fukuoka, and continues across Shikoku and Okinawa
Winter can be slower travel times in Japan, with fewer visitors, but each season comes with its own considerations:
- Winter travel – This is the quietest time to visit major sights in cities like Tokyo and Kyoto; you can expect colder, dryer weather across the country
- When to avoid – Peak domestic travel periods such as New Year, Golden Week in late April to early May
