Best time to Visit

Good time to visit

Average time to visit

Japan has four seasons and is best visited in spring from March to May and autumn from September to November. December to January can be cold with snow and the summer is hot and humid. The end of March and early April is a particularly good time to visit as this is the cherry blossom season as is October for the autumn colors.

Japan is one of the most fascinating destinations in Asia and this classic itinerary is perfect for those wanting to experience the delightful diversity of the country, with stops at the main highlights of Tokyo, Kyoto, Hiroshima and Hakone.

  1. Days 1-4: Tokyo

Begin your exploration of fascinating Japan in the exciting capital, Tokyo. We have included three nights for you to explore the city, however you could spend three weeks in this sprawling metropolis and still have new sites to see. During your time in Tokyo we have included a full day tour of the city with a private guide, using the super-efficient public transport system. This is a brilliant way to see the city, beating the traffic, and having a local show you how everything works for when you want to venture out on your own. There is so much to do and see in the city but as a start we have included visits for you for the Imperial Palace Gardens, the exclusive shopping at Ginza and the bright lights of Shinjuko.

Accommodation: Mandarin Oriental Tokyo (3 nights)

  2. Days 4-7: Kyoto & Around

From Tokyo, take the world-famous bullet train to Kyoto, just over two and a half hours away and where you will be spending your next three nights. Japan’s cultural center, Kyoto, has hundreds of Shinto and Buddhist shrines and temples to explore, a beautiful Geisha district and Japan's ancient culture. As there is so much to do and see in Kyoto we have included a full day guided tour of the city so that you get the most out of your time here, as there are over 2,000 temples that can be visited!  Temples are not the only thing to see in the city, as Kyoto is famed for its foodie scene and culture and we have included a visit to the buzzing Nishiki Market for you, full interesting market stalls to stop in at.

Accommodation: The Ritz-Carlton Kyoto (3 nights)

  3. Days 7-9: Hiroshima

After Kyoto, head south to Hiroshima, again by bullet train, for your next two nights. Famous for the Atomic Bomb Museum, we very much suggest a visit to this humbling site on the day that you arrive in Hiroshima. The following day, head further south by train and ferry to the picturesque Miyajima Island for a wonderful day of sightseeing. Feeling like you have stepped back in time, Miyajima is a lovely area to explore and this Unesco World Heritage site boasts one of Japan’s most photographed shrines, the red floating Tori Gate.

Accommodation: Sheraton Grand Hiroshima Hotel (2 nights)

  4. Days 9-11: Hakone, Mount Fuji & Around

From Hiroshima, you will head back up the island of Honshu to Hakone. Again, using the bullet train you’ll connect in Nagano and continue on to Odawara Station where you will be met by your chauffeur and driven up to near Lake Ashi for two nights to experience a traditional ryokan. Known for its onsens, or natural hot spring baths, Hakone has long been known as an area for relaxation and over your two nights here spend your days exploring the surrounding countryside with some beautiful hikes or visiting one of the many fantastic art museums in the region. Each evening, you will be treated to incredible multi-course Kaiseki cuisine with each course beautifully presented with amazing detail.

    Accommodation: Gora Kadan (2 nights)

  5. Days 11-12: Tokyo

For your final night in Japan, you’ll head to Tokyo at just a short 45-minute bullet train transfer from Odawara. Here visit sites that you missed on your first stay in the city and allow us to recommend one of our favorite restaurants for you, as your grand finale on the journey before heading home the following day.

    Accommodation: Peninsula Tokyo (1 night)
