Day 1: Arrival in Japan's Dynamic CapitalUpon arrival into Tokyo, you'll be met at the airport or port and transferred to your hotel by private vehicle. The remainder of the day is at leisure to settle in and begin exploring the city at your own pace.
Day 2: Tradition Amid the MetropolisMeet your guide this morning and set out to explore some of Tokyo's most important cultural and historical landmarks. Begin at Meiji Jingu, one of the city's most significant Shinto shrines, approached through towering torii gates and a forest of more than 100,000 trees.
Continue to Harajuku and Omotesando, neighbouring districts that showcase contrasting sides of modern Tokyo, from independent fashion boutiques to elegant, tree-lined avenues.
This afternoon, travel by public transport to Korakuen Garden, one of Tokyo's finest examples of traditional Japanese landscape design. Later, continue to Asakusa, home to Senso-ji, Japan's oldest Buddhist temple. Stroll along Nakamise Street, where stalls selling traditional snacks, handicrafts and souvenirs line the approach to the temple.
At the end of the day, return to the hotel with your guide or continue exploring independently.
Day 3: Exploring Japan's Culinary CapitalThis morning, discover Tsukiji Outer Market, long regarded as the centre of Tokyo's culinary culture. Accompanied by your guide, wander among the market's shops and stalls, sampling local specialities and learning about the area's history. Visit a local Shinto shrine where worshippers pray for prosperity, protection and favourable weather.
Following the market visit, take part in a hands-on sushi-making experience under the guidance of a sushi chef. Learn how to prepare and present both nigiri and makizushi before enjoying your creations alongside a side dish and miso soup. Lunch is included.
This evening, meet your guide and explore Tokyo's food scene through a progressive dinner across three local restaurants. Begin with an introduction to the neighbourhood, which developed around important railway lines and retains much of its traditional atmosphere.
Your first stop is a lively tachinomi standing bar, serving dishes such as kushikatsu alongside seasonal small plates. Continue to a kappo-style restaurant where the menu changes according to the freshest ingredients available, with dishes that may include sashimi, tempura and slow-cooked meats.
The final stop is a historic restaurant dating from the 1850s, where seasonal dishes may include nabe hotpot, seared bonito, yellowtail and local vegetables. Food and both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks are included throughout the evening. Afterwards, continue exploring independently or return to the hotel.

Day 4: Across Japan by Bullet Train
This morning, make your way to Tokyo Station and board the bullet train to Hiroshima. As the train travels west, look out for Himeji Castle, often referred to as the White Egret Castle, and the Seto Ohashi Bridge, linking Honshu and Shikoku.
Day 5: Sacred Miyajima & Peace Memorial Park
Today, travel by ferry to Miyajima, a sacred island in the Seto Inland Sea known for its shrines, temples and local specialities. Sample regional delicacies including oysters, saltwater eel and maple leaf-shaped cakes as you explore.
Visit Itsukushima Shrine, one of Japan's most celebrated views, whose vermilion torii gate appears to float on the water at high tide. Continue to Daisho-in Temple, one of the island's most important Buddhist temples, where rows of spinning sutras line the approach to the main hall.
Return to Hiroshima in the afternoon and visit Peace Memorial Park and Museum, including the A-Bomb Dome and the Children's Peace Monument, which together offer insight into one of the defining moments of modern history.

Day 6: Arrival in the Cultural Capital
Today is self-guided. Travel by bullet train to Kyoto, Japan's historic cultural capital, home to around 2,000 shrines and temples and 17 UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The remainder of the day is at leisure.
Day 7: Shrines, Markets & Samurai-Era Heritage
Meet your guide this morning and begin at Fushimi Inari Shrine, renowned for the thousands of vermilion torii gates that climb the wooded slopes behind the main shrine. Dedicated to the Shinto deity of rice, it provides an excellent introduction to the connection between Shinto beliefs and the natural world.
Continue to Sanjusangendo, home to 1,001 life-sized golden Buddhist statues housed within the longest wooden building in Japan. From here, travel to Nishiki Market, often referred to as Kyoto's kitchen, where stalls and specialist stores sell everything from tofu and pickles to knives and traditional crafts.
In the afternoon, visit Nijo Castle, the former residence of the Tokugawa shoguns.
Explore its decorated interiors, audience halls and famous nightingale floors, designed to chirp underfoot. Later, continue to Nanzenji, a Zen temple founded in 1291 and known for its peaceful grounds and contemplative rock garden.
At the end of the day, return to the hotel or continue exploring independently.
Day 8: Kyoto at Leisure
Today is yours to enjoy independently. Explore further afield, revisit favourite neighbourhoods or spend time discovering Kyoto's temples, gardens and traditional districts at your own pace.

Day 9: Ryokan Living & Mountain SceneryToday, travel by train to Hakone, one of Japan's best-known hot spring destinations and a gateway to views of Mount Fuji.
Your accommodation is a traditional ryokan, featuring tatami flooring, futon bedding, sliding paper screens and hot spring baths. This evening, enjoy a traditional multi-course Japanese dinner, which typically includes dishes such as sushi, sashimi and tempura.
Day 10: Along the Old Tokaido RoadToday, join a guided walk along a section of the historic Old Tokaido Road, once the main route connecting Kyoto and Edo, present-day Tokyo. Follow cobbled pathways through Hakone's varied landscapes while hearing stories of the merchants, samurai and travellers who once used this important highway.
The route passes through forest, marshland and rocky terrain, with views across Lake Ashi and, on clear days, Mount Fuji. Guests should expect approximately six hours of walking along a 6.5-kilometre route with an elevation change of around 900 metres.
Pause in Hatajuku, known as the birthplace of Hakone's traditional yosegi zaiku woodworking craft, where intricate geometric patterns are created using carefully assembled pieces of natural wood.
Continue to Amazake Chaya, a historic teahouse that has welcomed travellers for more than 400 years, before reaching Lake Ashi. The final section follows Cedar Avenue and visits the former Hakone Checkpoint, which once controlled movement along the Tokaido Road.
At the conclusion of the walk, return to your ryokan and enjoy the remainder of the day at leisure.
Important note: This is a full-day hike. Appropriate hiking clothing, hiking boots, rain gear, water, sun protection and a day pack are essential.

For your final night in Japan, you’ll head to Tokyo at just a short 45-minute bullet train transfer from Odawara. Here visit sites that you missed on your first stay in the city and allow us to recommend one of our favourite restaurants for you, as your grand finale on the journey before heading home the following day.
Day 12: Departure Day
Transfer to the airport for your onward flight.

Japan has four seasons and is best visited in spring from March to May and autumn from September to November. December to January can be cold with snow and the summer is hot and humid. The end of March and early April is a particularly good time to visit as this is the cherry blossom season as is October for the autumn colours.
