Qatar is a destination of striking contrasts and effortless luxury, where timeless Arabian tradition takes centre stage, as cutting-edge design grows elegantly around its roots. Beyond the capital, the city gives way to desert almost immediately, pale dunes rolling south toward Khor Al Adaid, where the sand runs straight into the sea at what's known as the Inland Sea. Doha holds both worlds at once, and it's worth looking past the skyline to find where they meet.

Mirrored towers rise above the dhow harbour, and a short walk from the glass and steel of West Bay, Souq Waqif's lanes still deal in spice, perfume and falconry, much as they always have. The Museum of Islamic Art holds one of the finest collections anywhere on its own quiet peninsula, while the National Museum of Qatar tells the country's story with real ambition, its architecture drawn from the swirling forms of desert rose crystals.

Shopping here shifts between the meditative and the theatrical. The Pearl-Qatar invites long, unhurried walks past flagship boutiques and waterside restaurants, while Al Hazm Mall brings Qatari architecture and European luxury together under one ornate roof. For something more immersive, an evening browsing handwoven textiles, Arabic perfume oils and hand-worked jewellery in Souq Waqif is as authentic a retail experience as the Gulf offers.

As a stopover, Qatar asks very little and gives a great deal. A few nights here reshape a long-haul journey: mornings in extraordinary museums, afternoons that drift by unhurried, evenings watching the city's lights settle across the bay.
